blue 173 into fb
i've had my fb for a while now came without an engine. just started my apprentiship so i have a bit of money to work with. wondering what engines would be good to put in, without having to go through regency in SA. and how easily they will fit to cross member and standard gear box. i was recently told a blue 173 would be good? still not sure.?!?

Hey kropesh congrats on the first post.I believe you need a trip to regency if you run with that engine. You will have to run pollution gear, change your mounts or run hr front, and pritty sure thats a negative with the gearbox. You may may have to fit seat belts, demisters and electric wipers 2 speed.Hopefully somebody else can confirm.
Regency still have a booklet about mods to early holdens and what is required. Do yourself a favour and drop in and get one.
If you can't get to Regency easily, PM me and I will try and find mine and scan it for you.
Regency aren't so bad if you do the right thing and if you don't you'll end up there anyway via a yellow sticker. Better to do it right the first time.

Welcome to the forums Kro, I know crap about the adelaide laws and can only speak from a Sydney perspective ( which I think are the strictest ). What the Captain has said follows NSW laws also.Kropesh wrote:better to run a stock engine then? if i can find one. not keen on going down to regency have all the rego papers still. and i've got a hr disc front end already.
I remember someone mentioning that a red motor 161 doesnt require engineering? I dont know if that is state specific however. The 161 will bolt straight into the HR front also.
Just something to keep in your mind ...... always go for the pre pollution motors. Our cars are old enough to get around having it , allowing a shitload of visible chrome and no clutter within the already tiny engine bays.

Hi Kropesh,
welcome aboard. Is your vehicle currently registered?
Is the HR front end already fitted?
What is your ideal plan for your car............ and what has been already done to it?
I suppose we need to know a bit more before offering appropriate advice.
I do believe that if it is still standard minus an engine - personally, I would follow that theme............. I suppose you probably need to conjure up a plan....
As mentioned by M, the blue may need restrictive fittings........ on the other hand - I think S has hit it on the head - have a very good look through that Regency book...............
Please feel free to throw up any questions here - I don't know where to point you if someone here can't direct you appropriately.
frats,

G'day Kropesh.
Here in NSW's the largest engine size without the requirement of a engineers report!..that can go into any vehicle is only 15% larger in capacity of the original maker, and in the same configuration.
So with that, the theoretical capacity in a FB would be a 149 Red motor and the same with EK's. The Old 161 just falls out of this equation due to increase in the 15% ratio.
Even though you have to change or modify the crossmember, to slot the red motor in, you do not need a engineers report at present for the change.
But if you want to go larger than the 15% rule, Sought a good Engineer and ask him or her what they want in reference to guidelines and rules, if that can't be sought contact the local RTA or DMT, whatever is in your state and request a Modifications to Light Motor Vehicle guidelines booklet or call in and get as much information as required.
Pollution requirements and needs are only for the engine year and not for current ratings. ( so if its a 1976 motor your sloting in, then its the 1976 pollution specs to be fitted to that motor as from factory) Current motors will require current emissions and possible expensive emission testing at your cost.
So if you need a engineers report why no go for the largest engine size you can go for, whether its a Six or Eight.
That would be my way of thinking, if you have to spend the money, go for the max.
Regards John
