Yes thanks mate. I’m down south on the Fleurieu peninsula, 50km away from the Cudlee Creek and Harrogate fire areas. The fire risk here is not on par with the Adelaide Hills. Combination of steep, heavily timbered and moderately populated area with difficult access, dryish late winter and spring and fresh and variable winds. I’ve lived in the hills and the threat of fire was prevalent every summer. Big fire on Kangaroo Island as well so there is a lot of smoke haze.

What colour have you decided ?

Wedgewood Blue Greg, as it left the factory.

I am intending to use ppg primer filler and solid colour. I’ve bought the primer but not the top coat. Now I’m wondering about using 2 pac. I could take back the primer as haven’t used any yet.

Had some advice from a panel beater who came and picked up all the glass from my old sedan. Says I should paint in the carport to avoid overspray fallout and think about using 2k not acrylic to make the job easier. I have no experience painting a car but think I will pick it up okay. What say you?

Its a funny thing this painting game !

Now I have used 2 pack I would never go back to acrylic, its so much more forgiving and quite easy really.

The only issue are the toxins and your neighbours !!!

So Bare metal and repairs done I would epoxy, then hi fill prime the same day, known as wet on wet. If your repairs are ok then rub the hi fill down with 600 dry and paint the colour and your done.

You can either use clear over base or just a straight colour (3 coats) again wet on wet (read up that process). When you master the gun technique and settings the paint dries nice and wet and a lot of paint jobs are left like that with slight orange peel.

I have used clear over base as I am rubbing it back and buffing it, a preference really.

Had a go on the bits that won’t need colour and can stay in the 2k etch prime. I only got 2 1/2 coats on. It is 35C in the shed and got dry patches but no runs at least. Bit heavy handed with the reducer at 30% and not sure I’ve got the gun set quite right but anyway maximum fan and 40psi at the gun.ImageImage
You can see the dry lines in the second shot. Flashed off 10 minutes between coats. Tailgate can go together now.
