Clay what's the magic solution you use to de rust ?
There is a product similar to fish oil by PPC I think, that flows into all the nooks and crannies then dries like paint, that's what I have used in the hard to get at bits. I will get a photo of the tin this arvo.

Bought a 25kg bag of citric acid crystal from rural supplies. Dissolve about one kg in a fish crate or say 5 kg in a large wheely bin. Soak for 24 hours then hit with pressure washer. Then get it dry ASAP either with heat gun or wd40. Doesn’t affect chrome but will remove some paint. Seems ok on rubbers etc. it’s just lemon juice really and non toxic. Great tip from Western Wagon.
Fish oil to the bits you can’t get too like inside box sections. It soaks in to the rust. Cavity wax if there is no rust.

Bit more on the tailgate After wire wheel and soaking in citric some more. Gave it a blast in the car port. Just like a dry windy day st the beach really.
I used my $30 blasting gun from Adelaide Tools and $3 worth of dried sand.

I’m lucky I have the van tailgate as a template as this one although rust free is pretty beaten up. I have it all fairly flat now but noticed that the van one has a fold near the top which seems to be all but bashed flat on this one.

Hi Clay excuse my ignorance but isn't the van one like the station wagon which would make it a bit different to the ute ???? I just received an almost perfect station wagon tailgate thanks to Trev in Wonthaggi and looking at it, it is quite different looks to have more cuve to the skin has a piece at the top for the seal to glue to and the inner shape of the frame is different and the top of the skin rolled over further but as I said I have not seen a van one to be able to compare.
Photos of the station wagon tailgate I would be interested to learn the differences.

Neil the van tailgates are identical to ute and nothing like the wagon. This applies to FB EK. FE FC will be a different story as the vans are more like a two door wagon.

Welding up the tray and poking around cleaning up the rear floor. Filled up most of the holes, ready for lots of grinding. Found a few small holes in the outboard bottom corners of the cabin rear wall. Scraped, blown and vacuumed out behind the skin atop outer sills between b pillar and rear wheel arch.
