And with the CHO576 plates - did you 'store' them at home? Or did you have them stored at the RTA? I had to keep GHV 548 with the RTA when I moved myself and my Monaro to Melb for a year, then dig em out for a fee when I moved back home.
Sadly, the seller had stored the plates with the RTA. No-way were they going to hand over the old plates. So I ended up with new, shiny CHO plates.

Silver solder is also your friend just as good as soft solder.
If you have access to oxy & accetalene, fill tank with water and use a little flux very easy to use mate, this is how I moved the filler neck on my commodore tank and blanked the old hole.

The FX was last registered in 1979; we bought it in 1982, and I re-registered it in 2005.
Of course - between '79 and '05 the DMT, no, the RTA, no, the RMS switched from paper records to a computer system, which would have prompted a massive departmental case of amnesia.
So when I applied for JX-408, I was told the number was available. And that was when you only had to pay the one-off fee.

I don’t have access to an oxy right now. My partner’s a jeweller and she uses a neat propane torch that i setup on a bbq gas bottle... for her sterling silver work. I might pinch her setup and see if I can get a result with silver solder...
Restoring my tail light assemblies this afternoon (these things are very well designed & executed units I have to say!) and I’ve found that I’m missing one of the little clear plastic ‘windows’ on the back. See pictures below.
Would anyone have a spare one they could part with?

You have polished up the lenses a treat. I did the same using Brasso then Autosol, makes a big improvement. Are you stripping the tail light surrounds to paint them body colour or did I spot some chrome ones in an earlier picture?

Yes good question! I can't even remember whether my ute had the plastic window in place. I obviously didn't pay enough attention when I had the covers off!

I assumed they were intended as illumination for the boot of an FC-FE Sedan... mind you I’ve never actually been in the boot of either of those models, just a guess.
I just want mine in place to keep the dust and water out.

I couldn’t save the red brake/tail lenses, so I bit the bullet and bought new Rares items.
I saved the indicator though, I have some fine Glass polish that I used to use on windscreens back in my mechanic days.
I’m actually going to leave the taillight surrounds chrome. Bill also swapped out the dash cluster for a chrome one, so I’ll leave it as is. Done the track, if/when I get serious about the bodywork, I’ll return the car to Pittwater Green and colour code it a-la factory Standard spec.
Joe I haven't forgotten about the overider for you, I have been looking for the second (I think I have a second) one but can't find it in amongst my pile of shite, my ute is going to panel and paint easter saturday so will have time to look then if you are not in a rush.
