HR lower control arms

Post by rosco »

Hi folk,
will shortly be refurbing my HD ball joint front end. I have the lower control arm pin kits and need HR lower control arms - they are 1/4" longer.
These have "HR" stamped inside them.
Of course, the bush eyes need to be in good condition and not stripped or worn out.

wouldn't the HR arms set your rims out another 1/4" ????
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Ekstevo,
I would be very interested in buying them from you if they are indeed HR and in good nick.
No - the HR ones are longer by 1/4". That's why I need them - they change the caster and it is for this reason I have been told to replace my HD ones.
To identify them, there is a "HR" stamped into the inside of them. I will make contact with my tech man and get the measurements.

Blacky, no - it won't affect the issue I was having with the rear guards. If anything, it will help with the issue I'm having with the front upper ball joint and 7" rims...

Errol, I don't know if longer arms will change the camber - as that will be evened out by adding shims to the upper arm mounts.
It will change the caster though - and this is why Holden changed the length from HD - for better handling.

HD ones are fairly rare..... I'll keep mine for someone with a genuine HD ball joint front end and wants it to be in spec.

thanks fella's for you replies,

Hi Rosco, I think longer top arms would help with bump steer issues. i.e. less camper change as the suspension goes through its range of travel. As both top and bottom arms are different in length the camber angle changes throughout the travel. Its probably questionable as to how much difference 1/4" would make. Not sure on that.

Thanks Craig,
I have to replace one of the lower control arms anyway - or have it re-conditioned (I am told they can be by a specialist company Rares, Bayswater recommended). The bloke who is going to recondition my steering box tells me that it would be beneficial to replace my HD lower arms for HR ones.... hence my hunt for them.

As you are probably aware, we are walkabout - I have scoured many piles of farm and roadside wrecks for a HR as we travel ... so far, nothing - there can't be too many rocking horses making their way around the place, there's no evidence of any droppings...
Have seen quite a few early wrecks stripped completely, and models from the 70's an onwards....

I do recall there were "classes" of Holdens raced... perhaps the HR was a popular or desirable model... we definitely see more FB's and EK's in our travels than HR's...

I have my full traveling AF toolbox with me - that was the plan.. so far, not one of those AF spanners has been removed from the box.

Thanks again, lots of work and research to do on this before I start pulling the old bus apart when we get back.

Hi Craig,
tried that.... through their forums - our's is a lot more "user" friendly, I didn't have any success getting in - even as a visitor.
Tried all the HD HR forums around Oz.. no dice. We are in really good shape as far as car forums is concerned - dibs to our moderators and whoever is the administrator.

I will probably try to make one of their meetings if I can't get my mitts on a pair of HR lower control arms - there has to be thousands of them out there around the country.

Sadly, they were very popular for rods as well... may even try a rod forum. We have some members in here who are also into rods...

I'm hoping something will come up by the end of the year.

Hot rodders and other early holden blokes have all ready got a lot or hr member stuff they were hard to get 10 years ago, I gave you a bumsteer Rosco I reckon the arms I have outside are HD they don't have HR stamped on them where abouts is HR stamped I'm now wondering what I have on my ek ,If I ever get to drive it I don't know anymore more than likely it'll be getting another front end under it anyway if I ever go back to it with the current case of finical depression its looking unlikely.
Good luck finding some.

Hi Rosco,

For some reason I think I may have a pair stashed at the back of my shed, I will have to move a substantial amount of stuff but I am looking for something else anyway.

I will let you know over this weekend but don't get your hopes up just yet.

EKstevo, don't ever give up hope on completing your build. As often is the case, they reach a "stalled" point either waiting parts or funds - but the outcome eventually comes - it's just a part of the "unknown" quantity of when...
I have sent an email to my tech bloke - awaiting reply.

Thanks Greg - I would really appreciate your eventual finding of these. Absolutely no rush - don't pull anything apart to get at them until you need to go in there. As mentioned, I won't be ready to do all this work until near the end of the year. Just having the parts ready to go shortens the list in preparation.

I'll bang in a post shortly when my info comes back.

I don't know if the MPC lists specs for both HD and HR - it should show different part numbers. I'm some 3,000 km's away from mine at present.

Rosco, I'm running an HD drum front end with HT stub axles with no issues. I do have a HR front end under the FB van that I have for sale. It has no discs or calipers and has had a dodgy mod for a V6/V8 conversion. Pretty sure the control arms are good though. I also have sourced a replacement HR front end for the build but i'm now forced to sell the Van. I'll check the control arms on the replacement front when it lands in my shed. Where abouts are you on your walkabout?
Let you know of my outcomes.
Cheers Theo Z....................

A bloke at old holden said the diff is between drum and disk for the lower arms

how would I work out what arms I have? I thought I took them off a hd prem that had disks.
