I'd be interested to hear what sort of fuel consumption everyone gets from their grey?
I have an FB wagon which I have recently rebuilt, including 40 thou o/s pistons. I am only getting just under 8 km/litre. It would be good to hear what I should expect on average.
Also, what things has anyone done to improve performance without major mods.
I run a 161 and trimatic in mine and fully loaded going to Bright (open road) sitting on around 50-55mph averaged around 9.5km/per litre and roughly in a week of normal driving average 6-7km/per litre.
Not bad for a tired motor...

My sedan has a stock grey out of a FE with twin 1 1/4" SU's and jack meyer headers with straight through split exhaust. it gets about 330 km's a tank on the highway and around 260 km's around town. I don't worry to much about what it costs as it's all about driving and cruizin! My Van runs a 186 with 5 speed and runs all day every day as the work truck, But I only get 110 miles to the tank(about 35 litres) Don't know what that is in km's. My fuel gauge doesn't work so I have to fill up every 110 miles anyway. You guy's can work out my km's to the litre.

i feel very good now if you get 330k's to a tank in yor sedan, cause i get 260k's out of a tank with a 308 in the van, open road doing between 100-115 kmh
We have three ways of stating what our fuel consumption is that I am aware of............ it all varies a bit in terms of relating one to the others.
I have always used miles per gallon - just a dinosaur I'm afraid.
Others use km's per litre,
When we metricated, the general exchange was litres per 100 km/s
I can offer the conversion of litres to miles per gallon and also litres and kilometers to miles per gallon
for litres to miles per gallon - divide your litres by 4.546
- that equals gallons
- then divide those gallons into the recorded distance in miles - this gives miles per gallon.
ie 300 miles divided by 10 gallons = 30 mpg.
for litres and kilometres into miles per gallon............
Divide the litres as above to give gallons then
- divide your km/s by 1.609 to give miles
- finally again divide the gallons into the miles........ = mpg.

I used to get around 28-30 mpg with my grey, manual and standard 3:89 diff on 175/13 radials- on a run but kept to around 55/60 mph.
I hit 33 mpg once - coming back from Mildura at 50 steady mph more than likely with a tail northerly wind. It is a bit of a down hill run from Mildura to Melbourne with basically just a few hills in the mid section.
If I belted it to 60/70 mph it would drop down to around 25/26 mpg.
Head wind at that would bust it down to around 22
I would insert the logbook figures, but they are in book 1 and are not on this file.

23/4/84 Trip to Yea, Seymour and Benalla – 60 & 70 mph
164,352 filled tank = 28.53 mpg.
Return via Euroa, Strathbogie, Merton and Yea – 50 – 60 mph
164,488 filled tank = 32.03 mpg
this was the best ever recorded - have come close a couple of times.
Around town up and down through the gears, traffic lights and idling in traffic - very often sees down around 20 mpg.
My calculations are with an absolute full tank facing down hill.
These figures all using "super" or later LRP petrol
I don't know how unleaded fuel affects these figures -
My feelings are that premium - Vortex, Ultimate etc. would equal that of Super.
i've used all types of fuel LRP,ethanol,and various premiums in both my VN runaround and the van with no significant difference in consumption or performance in either
but we used to have a late '80's corrolla that would ping it's head off unless we ran it on premium unleaded
As long as I'm driving, That's all that matters to me. I've never been one to worry about fuel consumption, as it's cheaper than buying water in some snobby cafe' and you look a hell of alot better cruizin past said snobbery with the wind in your hair(if you've got any)

What a strange subject. I once bought a 302 falcon for $200.00 and drove the wheels of it then sold it to a mate for $1000.00 a few years later. It used to get about 8km per litre if driven nice put the boot in and it dropped to as low as 4km per litre, usually on a sat night!
My point is (other than being a good business man) was my mate used to curse at the fuel consumption so traded it in on a $30,000 dollar Commodore, cant remember what model but it also used a similar amount of fuel, maybe a bit better. So he has outlayed $30 grand to save approx $10 bucks per tank. It would take him 3000 tanks of fuel before he made any saving by then the Commodore has dropped in value and in need of half the mechanicals changed over. I have a strange way at looking at things!
The key here is if you don't want to pay for fuel buy a car that dosen't use much.
If you dont care about fuel consumption buy a big block!

I had a VN too, worst fuel consumption i ever encountered. Had it for 3 years and then after i cooked the trans. (No extra trans cooler and hauled a heavy trailer from Biloela to Brisbane in o-drive, that and having an idiot mate decide to put it into park at 40kph didnt help..)
I traded it on a VT 5.7L manual sedan. (best ever fuel consumption i ever had.)
One run coming home from Tumut in NSW i did approx 600Klm+ to a tank of fuel (60 odd Ltrs from memory.) This was with 4 adults, luggage for a week long trip and the A/c running. Great car, sorry to let it go.
My Mk2 Cooper "S" used to ping on everything. I Belive its because the octane rating in Australia is same as for a 3rd world country. (I belive Lada's run great on Australian fuel.)
To solve the pinging issue is used to fill one tank with super and the other with av-gas and can i say the little 1380cc used to purr like a well fed cat on the 50/50 mix,
i also loved the look all the Biggles wanna-be's used to give me when i rocked onto the little airport taxi-way at Murwillumbah with my mini. totally priceless
I'm running a very standard 173 which used to have X2 carby and header setup on it, now I'm not much in to working out how much fuel I use but on road trips when we have about 8 to 10 cars in all forms (grays, reds, v8's) filling up I was always pretty close to Rosco on cost, which was always cheaper than the gray,s.
Now I changed to a single carb and manifold and smaller exhaust, I'm getting more power and about the same economy, that is after I found and fixed 2 fuel leaks , Trev .

having not drove my car for near three years what do you guys reckon the go is as my local servo dont sell super or super replacemant do i go premium , and or add some oil to unleaded to lube valve seats or just go mental and try some diesel out a my truck??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
when they start building them like that again i will buy a new car of them
