The original owner of 40 years was an electronic engineer who enjoyed well electrics. No kidding, there are leads to the clutch, brakes and accelerator triggering alarms/lights and other stuff I havent found yet. While I appreciate the old guys enthusiasm, makes life pretty friggen hard when I barely have any idea about electronics.
Rather than to retrace 40 years of what may have been a time machine proto-type, I was looking at pulling the whole lot out and starting again.
So, my question is can you get aftermarket wiring looms and how complicated is it to do?

Defintely wise to rip it out and start again. My old man put an Aussie Auto Loom in his Customline with out too many drama's at all and he's not the best with electrics. Even better being local you can ring him if you have any questions. I'd recommend it especially after seeing your exsting loom.....

do you have an original workshop manual or know of someone who does ?
Because the holden manual shows complete electrical schematic and even down to colour of individual wires. I have this in my ek manual.
Do you need to use the car regularly ?
If not then disconnnect battery and do a little bit at a time.
Unless he has damaged the wires in the original loom or they have deteriorated with age i wouldn't recommend replacing with a new loom.
There's plenty of old cars running around with original wiring that's still functioning how it was intended to safely.

Remember when i looked at your car and i found the wire jammed in the wiper mechanism.
Yeh it is a bit of a birds nest but it can be sorted.
In all the movies I've watched with wiring similar to that they always almost cut the red wire and then change their mind and cut the white wire instead and then they all cheer and hug and kiss each other 'cause they've just saved the world.
And it always happens with only 2 seconds left to go!!

Ill sit down and spend some time and see how it cleans up. The car is only for Sundays and Ive finished Uni for another year so Ive got a bit of time to play.
maybe you need to press the red on then flick the black one on while holding the silver toggle switch up and then press the black button one till the red light near the black one goes on and the other red light flashes and turn the key and then it might start

the buttons not doing anything reminded me of something funny
in my younger days had a mate that worked in a car dealership, a panel van got traded in had a huge overhead console full of those aircraft type switches the types where you lift a cover to flick the switch, each switch had a red light beside it, so what were all these switches for
flick a switch and the red light beside it would come on and that's it
between the console all the lights,wiring and switches must have been a couple of hundred dollars worth
It looks pretty obvious what is factory and what has been added in, just disconnect the battery and remove all the non original crap and hopefully you will be good to go.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.
