186 engine

Post by iso007 »

Hey guys, i am after a good 186 motor complete. I have a 202 in the fb and cant get it passed without re-engineering it so i want to go back to the 186. price is important but willing to pay what it is worth especially if it has got a bit of work done to it. probably should put a 5 speed too if one is available.

engineers have told me lately you need to get a 149 engineered not for capacity or brakes
but for engine mounts and gear box mount if not using the grey motor box beause there different to the 138
also anything from 179 up eg 179 186 202 v6 v8 will need a colapesable colomn . it used to be from 202 up

Ek jay may be able to vouch for me that I have a pretty good 186 I could sell in a couple of weeks.
Jay would you be able to direct iso007 to those photos in your for sale thread? Thanks.

Surprised they haven't made collapsible column's standard on all fully registered cars regardless of engine size. Not sure what Victoria is up to these days but is something I'm considering for my stock ek.. Can't quite get that impact to my chest out of my head when I drive these days.. Has anyone here, daily drivers with a 138ci changed over?

Hey ekjay. The problem with all this talk about what can an what can't pass is pretty flexible. My ek an my Fb have been registered for years with 186 motors. Not engineered, just registered. I upped the Fb to a good 202 engine and that made the alarm bells ring at the mechanics. My original mechanic retired and that is when all the trouble started. So ifound an engineer and he knocked me back for the 202 because it needed a chassis strengthened, dual brake circuit and collapsible column. Now this is my engineer not everyone else's and this is nsw. I have been looking around for another engineer for a second opinion but thought it would be easier to just go back to a186. Still, I may have let the cat out of the bag. My advise wild be to find an engineer, be willing to give him a few bucks and get it from the horses mouth. After all, you can't go to the registry office and expect them to pass your work based on what someone told you or someone else did. I am an engineer surveyor and I certify pressure welding, pressure vessels and boilers. ( not cars). I will always tell people what I will accept if they ask me.
Hope this helps
Ian

my understanding is now you need to go back to a 161 or 173 not to need a colapse colom
nothing wrong with a good 173 had one in my sedan for a few years and it went well just as good as the 186

i had a van but had red 6 with a collapsable collum it had a H/KTG collum and steering box obviously a few mods were needed to fit both but it didn't look like much (was in the car when i bought it) and it had a froor shift but i would think with a little tinkering you could make the gears work off the collum
in saying all that collapsable collums aren't a be all and end all in saftey the fella that lives next to me's son was killed in a car accident punched in the throat by the collum in a late model falcon with collapsable collum

If your 202 is good, willing to swap a 179?
