Tool Time!

Post by Marty K Bird »

Kinda wish there was a separate forum section for just tools with threads sections for things like grinders, buffers, migs, engine stands ect..... as its a big part of lots of peoples sheds and its hard to beat first hand experience... but anyway i thought id post something in this section.

Please link me if there is already a section for tool talk.

Recently I have needed to buy a new angle grinder after the old one i had here gave up the ghost. I think it crapped out after a few good sessions with wire brush attachments cleaning up some old rims. I think the wire brush attachments are hard on them as they can never be balanced spot on and the nature of the work is also hard on them ....

So anyway i went looking for a replacement with maybe an emphasis on a "cheapy" as i plan on giving it hell!! lol
My local Hardware shop had these nice looking Einhell ones they now stock after they have got out of the cheaper ROK brand ones...
The Einhells came in the 3 sizes or the smaller grinders 4, 4.5 and 5 Inch. Both the 4 and 4.5 had the same power rating (600watts) but were fairly cheap ($55ish) The 5 inch which i was leaning towards was around $86 at my local .... and it had 1010watts.

They look spunky too and ergonomic~

But i end up going to the only other shops that sells things like this in town and they had the ROK brand and a 5inch with 1200 watts of power for just $69 and it had the same 2 year warranty.

The build quality doesn't seem the same and they quote the Einhell as being quieter ..... this things rattled from the get go lol ..... but it was cheaper and with more grunt and also had another feature which i liked which is a variable speed. I haven't seen many variable speed angle grinders and i thought it could be handy.

So far its seems ok ... im using it with a JOSC brandy Brumby strip it disc to remove some paint ....and I think the variable speed is nice.... Ive tried it on its lowest speed and i can still take paint off nicely without "ripping" into it too much and causing too much heat.

So there ya go .... I am sure the reputable brands like Makita, Bosch and Ryobi and some others are hard to beat .... but for a cheapie thats going to get a hard life .... i think these ROK things r ok !

From my personal experience, I bought a cheapie too when I start building my EK ten years ago. I had the attitude I only need it for building the car if it lasts I'll be happy. So I went to Bunnings and grabbed an Ozito 4.5" grinder with discs, goggles and gloves for under $50. It's still going strong after all the rust repair, wire brush work and general abuse. The only thing is its noisy now and the button you press to lock the disc is gone but it still works.

Same with an orbital sander spent $15 on an xu1 brand mainly to help strip the car to bare metal. Yet another cheapy I haven't been able to kill. Go figure....

Being variable speed, you should be able to get a buffing attachment for it too

DR, i agree cant beat a cheapie that you cant kill!! .... and i do love the Ozito stuff from Bunnings ..... I have been through two of their "Dremels" .... but they do get a hard life!! If i could just buy brushes for them they should be goers again .... but the brushes are probably not much cheaper than a whole new box and dice!
Speaking of brushes this new ROK grinder has a pack of spare brushes .... which reminded me there was a set of spare brushes my dad hung on a nail in the shed .... its probably for the old grinder so it might get a look at soon!

I do also have a cheapie orbital too somewhere .... i might have to get that into action!

Muza i had thought the same thing about maybe being able to use it for a polisher too ... the book says revs are (no load) 5000- 12000rpm so maybe a bit too fast for a buffer ... but its nice to be able to have some speed control....

Tim, sounds like your all sorted with one or each job!! I might see if i can revive my 4inch for some of the finer cutting jobs! I have a fine brass wire wheel on my drill or eating bog and other bits ... seems to work ok.
Sending one might mean the postage costs more then the buy new price lol!
