How do you plug weld I have tried the way I think but they don't stick together a slight twist and they come apart
This is my method drill hole in top piece and fill hole using a MiG with weld
Question Do I drill a hole in bottom piece as well,I have had a play around trying to get it to work I have counter sunk the bottom piece maybe its my settings,I have a cig MiG but cant weld real good (weld === grind === weld=== grind) wont to weld two 3mm plate./// Any tips?
Thanks Guys

Hey Billy ..heres a few photos of my subframe strengthening plates being welded and plug welded........we used a 12mm drill thru the top plate only and clamped the work together ......real important with any mig weld the metal must be very clean and rust free .....Hope this helps mate ...Fingers
Don’t you find it Funny that after Monday(M) and Tuesday(T), the rest of the week says WTF?
Fingers/wot179
My prep looks like Fingers and weld looks the same but it has not the penetration to stick it together I used 1/4'' hole like I said the weld looks good but it 's not, as I wont to plug weld some brackets onto csr chassis strength support for handbrake I need to know it is going to hold

You need a bigger hole mate .....1/2 inch will allow you to strike the arc in middle of the bottom plate and work out ,making sure you got enough amperage to get good penetration ......Fingers

What sort of amperage are we talking about ,BALL PARK

I,ll check the settings on my mig on saturday afternoon mine is a transmig 215 and they will all vary or check your setup sheet on the inside of the wire compartment it should tell you the amperage and the wire feed settings ,or maybe Wot179 might be able to do it a little quicker but I gotta work tomorrow.. ..........Fingers

hey mate,
yeah 6mm hole needs to be bigger, you could leave a slight gap(.5mm-1mm) if you want but that will only benefit your top plate depending on amperage.
i would say about 110 to 130 amps on 3mm,maybe about 20 volts approx.

Mate the prior advice is right your welds arent getting hot enough for the metals to bond try cranking up your amps and reduce your wire speed a touch, I would also suggest practicing on some scrap first as it normally ends up with a neater job.
I tend to plug with the oxy or drill big holes if I can, if you must plug with the mig try to keep the surfaces touching or go up a voltage setting to what I'd use to weld a run. In heaps of dungers I've worked on I've found mig plugs that haven't stuck.
