EK hydramatic to VR V6

Post by gnomester »

Hi All
I've had an EK body shell sitting around my home for the last 25 years waiting for me to get off my backside and do something about getting it back on the road. So the time has come to start and I'll be talking to the finance people and an RMS approved engineer, who I know well, tomorrow.
After moving house a few years back the poor girl has been sitting out in the weather and so I plan to get her off to the rust repairers to fix up the small amount of rust in the body and lower doors before it becomes a substantial problem.
As I have a complete VR Commodore I'll be going down the V6 conversion and using as much off this vehicle as I can and as I plan to have the EK as my only car once I retire it wll be used as my daily driver. Another reason for doing the V6 mod.
I can already appreciate the wealth of information and knowledge on this great forum and hope as my project moves forward to contribute by posting updates.

yes good luck with the car,a good clean up and under cover is a good start, and there's a few of us doing V6 conversions so there's lots of ideas to read about.

Started to give the EK a clean up and polish. looks better than it really is with rust under the lower rear window trim and RH wheel arch as well as both plenum chambers. Hopefully she will be off to the repairers soon to have the rusty bits repaired...

Well... My application for a loan has been knocked back by the Credit Union that I have been a member of for over 25 years. Their issue is a complaint from a large Communications company that is a crock of $h!+ and I will be moving my account to another organization very soon and contacting the telecommunications Ombudsman for the forth, yes I said FORTH!!, time over this issue.

Now .. back on topic

I have been sifting through all the bits and pieces that I have for this EK and although I would like to do a V6 conversion I do have enough stuff lying around to build up a HR disc front end. I also have a HR diff rear end. There is also a GMH red 202 in poor condition in the back of the shed as well. All these bits and pieces need a bit, or lot, of TLC. So it is time to use what i have :D

So .. I guess I need to start a new topic for this build as it has changed so much from the V6 idea but my desire to complete the build or my enthusiasm has not wained with this setback as I have decided to do a self funding restoration

i'd keep going with this thread myself, and a red 202 sounds great and a lot easier to do and cheaper and it will still be a goer, and if we all had heaps of money would it be still be fun, i love scrapping up enough money to get just one part, and knowing, i still need three more parts, just to finish one section of the car. ENJOY the moment

Not a lot of work done on the EK....

But she has had a cleanup, some of the pretty chrome bits have been removed and I have found some nice wheels and tyres...

Thanks EK JAY, I did'nt know there was a wreckers in Lawson so I'll have to nip down there and have a squiz. I'll have to have a go at my workmate Frank, who is from Hazelbrook for not letting me know this kind of important information

Thanks Wayne, I have read this thread and have looked at the carport with enclosure kits in Supacheap but as I live in a very windy area, just below the 1000 meter alpine zone I doubt it would stay up for long. I have gone the car cover approach and even it has been blown off in the last few days, to my suprise I must admit.

There are some nasty bits too.... the RH side outer wheel arch had been previously bogged and is falling away. there is water getting into the top of the wheel arches so I guess there is somthing hiding under the rear window glass trim. rust in the bottom of the rear quarter panels, a tiny bit in the drivers side floor and at least 3 out of 4 door sills and then this...

Image

I did inherit this rust when I bought her but did not know until the plaster bandage patch job was found covering this :esurprised:

Well, I do hope my wheels will look something like this....

Image

Snowcrest White centre with photoshopped ( well.. actually, Gimped) red centre on the hubcap with seatbelt GMH lions.

and I am very close to sending the front end bits like the crossmember, swingarms etc.. off to get cleaned up...

happy :D

I have been a bit neglectful of the slow and tiresome work of cleaning up the HR frontend of late, but, it could be because the Gods had other ideas for my Earthly chariot. I had been keeping an eye out for a nice red 186 or smaller Cu" motor to appear locally and then I saw this.....

Image

$40.00's later this poor rejected soul of an FC motor, dumped by the uncaring at the tip was on its way to a loving home.  :)

So my plans change again... from a v6 to a holden red to a grey.

If I don't get my finger out soon and make some progress I could procrastinate enough to end up with a series70 Victa under the bonnet
