The regular thing to do is take a hydramatic quadrant and grind the back away until flat, then make it smooth with increasingly finer wet-and dry sandpaper. HoldenMan (check online) sells laser cut letters in the same colour and style so you can put the correct letters in their place.
I could not bring myself to do this to an original quadrant, so I carved one from a solid piece of clear plastic. It took me a about three hours, but it was easier than I thought. One of those dremel tools made it more practical.
The dovetails in the bottom were tricky, but they came out adequate. The finish was done using 2000 grit wet and dry using WD40 as a lubricant.
Then a bit of brasso and a rag and it's like a new one. Ready for the letters.

Re: trimatic Quadrant
Thanks for the info Bluehaze i'll give it a try.
Re: trimatic Quadrant
the selector quadrant from a HD HR will fit with a little fiddling - it indicates correctly except that it is for a 2 speed only , which means that 1st gear is just below "S'' on the quadrant.
I have it in mine and it looks factory except for the position of ''R'"
