steering column advice...

Post by Philip »

Hello there folks,
just looking for some advice before spending more money, new front end is in ( HR front mount rack and pinion) and have mocked it all up with an extra non collapsable column i have, but it has been shortened, only peeks through the firewall 2 inches, shaft runs just to the inside of the engine mount, looking to grab one of those ididit set ups, but the shortest is 28", just seems like there would be trouble fitting it around the engine mount, i know the original is much longer but has anyone been through this or had one of those columns? or do i go for one of the longer ones to clear the mount down the outside instead? also do i need specific bolts to secure the steering arms to stub axle? or any well fitting hi tensile item will do? please excuse the amatuer questions, my first attempt at building a car......

Sorry for lack of replies Phillip obviously not alot of people have done that with the column.
The steering arms will take any grade 8 bolts.

A bit more info might help Philip, is it a front or rear mount rack ? are you running a V8 , V6 or straight 6 ? All these things impact on what you are going to need mate.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

(HR front mount rack and pinion) holden six, currently original column shortened to 24 inches, intermediate shaft runs just inside of engine mount, does the angle of the shaft connecting column to steering rack matter? if i run a longer column therefore running shaft down outside of engine mount (therefore creating a bigger bend but shorter shaft) can this have an effect on overall steering? i had just assumed that with so many HR front mount CRS front ends floating around i figured someones come across this situation once or twice......

You want to keep the angle on the steering knuckles to a minimum, can you post a picture of what you have now ?
