Sandblasting costs

Post by Tim »

Hi all,
Had a rough quote over the phone today for sandblasting the EK, after the paramedics revived me I asked again just to be sure of what I heard.

bead blast outside paint $1200. then garnet blast rust & the rest, a little over $2000 to do the job properly, and only if I prepare the car first(degrease and remove body deadener).

elswhere on the forum I've seen prices around $400-$600 http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... =sandblast they look great.
Can anyone recomend a blaster, $2000 + is just way to much. :?

Hi Tim,

Yes that sounds right for a bead/garnet blast. I'm told the reason why it's dearer is because of the cost of purchasing the actual plastic beads. Using plastic bead is more gentle on the steel than sand.

There are a few options for stripping paint/rust...all with good and bad points...

-sand blast
-plastic bead and garnet
-garnet
-dipping - http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... 82&start=0
-scotchbright pads and sand blast http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... c&start=45

G'day Tim

Look into soda blasting, kind on the steel and dosn't rust after its done unlike sandblasting.
Greg aka EK 283 had his acid dipped fantastic job, removed totally everything including the stucko in all the joins, I think that only cost him 2 grand to get that done. You should get in touch with him to find out more info.

G'day Tim,

Send Trev a PM, as looking via the link of yours he got his done for $650.Thats a third of the cost you were quoted. He lives not too far from you and his sandblaster may be cost effective for you.

Cheers,

Terry.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Tim,

I went to the same place as Trev on his recommendation and was very happy with the result.

Like Trev, i can't find the number but will go past over the weekend to see if his number is on the building.

Thanks Trev & Paul,
I just jumped on to yellow pages and found Blast- N- Peen 5 Futura rd Keysborough 9769 1822, does that sound like it? If so I'll give them a call on Monday,
How long ago did you two get yours done? maybe the costs have gone up considerably since then.

Cheers....Tim :)

Hi Tim,

That's the one, i was just about to post the phone number.

I got my wagon done on the outside and the underside of the bonnet about a month or so ago. It actually cost me $900.

Trev's got a sedan, so i would guess sedans are a little cheaper than wagons??????

Trev's got a wagon as well (a FB no less :D ) and it was the wagon that was blasted.

Regards, Smooth 8)
Thanks Smooth, your rite, it was the wagon but he quoted me $650 for the bare shell ( in and out) but when I delivered the car the front was off it, so he tried to charge me extra for doing two pieces, but I stuck to my guns and paid $650 as quoted.
Probably why he's put his price up to $900  .
I also had all my doors, bonnet, front guards and upper'n'lower tailgates done sepperately at another place, so at the end of the day it would have cost me more than $900, Trev 8) .
