Re: Grey Motored Speed Boats
Welcome to the forum Gavin , where are you going to use it - Rowles lagoon ?? There was quite a few timber speedboats in Kal back in the day - the Hicks family built several back in the days when we used to go skiing on the lake where Frogs Legs open pit is now. Mightn't hurt to put a wanted ad in the Miner , you never know your luck.tintin wrote:Hey guys I am interested in buying a wooden speed boat - similar to Miss behavin (or the actual boat) in the first pages of this thread - can some one help - glen l do a tiny mite - i am chasing 12 foot - engine in front of cockpit - they look way cool will pay handsomely for right boat - in Kalgoorlie western australia. PM Thommo mate , I was having a beer with him last week and he told me there was one for sale in Adelaide.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Ive got a late forties 16 foot clinker flathead &*#@ v 8 powered racing skiff for sale. It need a lot of work but is very rare. The hull is very solid but has two split planks. Their is no rot. The deck is off. The engine is supposed to run well but ive never heard it run.
The homemade tube trailer has 38 &*#@ wheels. I towed it a hundred miles home but im a risk taker.
$2750 dave 0413766501

Hey Blacky,
You sound local mate - one local recognises another ha - Rowles lagoon has no water - buloc holes is the place - it is a little further in from Coppi almost on Kundanna mine.
Yeh might try the ad - can not see the Hicks clan selling theres but
Cheers bootlegger - the boat needs to meet a few criterias - about 12ft - 14 ft length max - I have a 16ft Skicraft Scorpia - great boat but SADLY it lives outside due to it not fitting in shed. Closer to home - costs about 3.5 k to get it from Sydney much less from south aus about 2k so hopefully there is a boat out there.
Cheers for the offer - love to see the photos anyways - I will post mobile number on here
Regards
Gavin

No probs. I do have an 11.5 ft hydro. Built in 1958 and never.finished. Runs an 1100cc fiat with a abarth pistons.
Still needs fitting out and a little work on the hull.
Its really cool. $3500.

Ps I used to own miss behavin. It was another boat built in the fifties and never launched. Its had a succession of owners over the last ten years and as yet hasnt been in the water.

Hey Dave,
Boat sounds interesting - is this it - where the photos were posted by Stewart?
Thanks stewart. I picked this boat up today from a deceased estate.
The boat was built in 1958 by goodlear speedcraft .
The repco head was purchased new from repco and the engine was prepared by her owner.
it is dry sumped and fresh water cooled.
It raced up in northern nsw until being retired sometime in the late sixties.
Included also is all the paperwork from repco for the head with a letter from the boss who worked with jack brabham.
Period pics and home movies of the boat racing, the family skiing. Even the boat being picked up from goodlear and the new repco on a stand.
I can wait to get her running again and back on the water.

Gavin
Hey Blacky did you ever work for Sheeds Electrical - I am one of his long standing mates/customer? The boat on your calendar looks like it might need a tad to much work for me

Re: Grey Motored Speed Boats
Couple of interesting camera angles there stewart. Hollywood here we come

Re: Grey Motored Speed Boats
Gents,
I have to admit this thread keeps me interested with each post - there is something very cool about an old boat running a grey motor. They are like triple Strommies - I have to keep resisting buying one, and remind myself to focus on one project at a time
.
One expression I've heard bandied around but don't fully understand is "marinised grey motor". I get the general idea, but can someone lay out for me the typical changes that you would expect to see in a marinised grey over a standard road-going grey (and why they are done)?
Cheers, and thanks for the learning,
Harv.
