Cleaning 30+ year old grime off Door cards and other vinyl!

Post by tashandbenny »

Hi guys, bout to start on the interior of the HQ! Kind of excited :D Finally getting to spend money on it to get it to Shows soon! ( the rubber on the floor needs replacing etc, kick panels replaced etc)

The door cards are in really good condition, so I dont think they really need to be replaced, except they have some pretty grubby yuck marks on them!..Im thinking just go get a vinyl cleaner from SuperCheap or something and scrub the crap out of it, but then wondered that there is probably a really good way to get it all pretty clean that restorers would do etc...
Best product to use, or any little weird tips that you guys have had work well? Also, what NOT to do tips ? haha

Thinking when I get the rubber for the bottom to just hop on Ebay perhaps to buy it and glue it all in myself? Would that be the best place to get it?
Was also told to spray the bottom with Lanolin or Odorless Fish oil before I put the rubber down to help keep the rust away..and not to bother with the insulation underneath it as its just a water absorber and is a great way for rust to get in and eat your floor pan..Is that a good idea?

Awesome, thanks alot for that, read through all those posts, sounds like the generic products and some elbow grease will do the job! :)

Really looking forward to cleaning it up this weekend :D

Got to go find some of those Chux magic erasers, gathering I'll find them near the Jiff and dishwashing liquid etc

yep in the cleaning aisle. Whatever you use first do a test on a small area and see what happens...

Ive had excellent results using methylated spirits in a sprey bottle and a soft nailbrush, then wipe as you go with a soft cotton Tshirt or paper towel.

Do small areas at a time.

Do not use a scouring pad or scotchbrite.

Do not use turps

Do not use thinners

Im also not a big fan of armourall or similar products. They make everything look too shiny .

I have also been told that they act like a cooking oil in the sun and will cause trims to shrink and dry out,and discolour with regular use over time.

(dunno how true that is,but the advice came from an un-named Summernats judge and showcar builder).

What is Simple Green?

Used those magic blocks on the weekend! Was so blown away at how effective they were! My door cards seriously look pretty damn close to brand new.
I had one little block left by the end of it, and tried it on the bench seat and dash etc, and of course brought them up pretty neat too! Think when I remove the seat to put in that rubber matting on the floor, Ill hit them with up with the magic blocks and really clean it up.

Thanks alot for putting me onto that, amazing! Also any sort of stains that didnt wanna come straight off, id wipe straight sugar soap onto and leave for a few minutes while I scrubbed somewhere else and then wipe it off, lifted the stain straight off
Wish I had taken some before and after shots!!

I've been retrimming/restoring a Caddie interior, for the vinyl that I can't replace I have used Arco (http://www.alternatetextiles.com.au/) and then White Spirits. Wipe some Arco on and leave over night, wipe off then use another lot to clean it again using a nail or tooth brush if there's dirt in the grain, then a final going over with White Spirits.
