Is it cheaper to get repairs done in bulk

Post by holdenutechick »

I know rechroming is cheaper the more chrome there is.

I was just wondering if that applies to anything else as now having found mum's FJ I now have 2 greys to get repaired and working, 2 lots of panel beating etc

I doubt you would get a cheaper rate on getting two cars panel beated. Ive found taking a lot of chrome plating tends to be a better rate than a few pieces at a time. I think you would be best to do one first before you get stuck into another. Start two at once and i doubt you will get any done.

Dave's right

I've got so much shit going on at my place I'll be 100 before I see it all through. Cars, bikes, house, garden (low priority - Round up fixes that one every couple of months)That is why I have decided to leave the FB ute as a roughie and just register it and drive the thing while we do the EK's - taking on two cars as newbies - big challenge but see how you go.

As far as the chrome goes you could also talk to the platers about the idea of doing a lot of the prep yourself as that is where the major cost is although most won't like the idea I do it on bike restos but then I also have an industrial buff and other toys. Worth looking into though, especially the steel stuff so long as it is straight.

I probably won't be doing the J myself as the extent of rust in the floor sills and frame is a job for a professional it has just as much rust if not more so than Stewart's old timer build so it's not going to be cheap I just wondered if getting common items fixed at the same time would make both vehicle repairs cheaper so I asked.

As far as rechroming / panelbeating goes it pays to ask around regarding quality, you can't expect good work for a discounted price. Talk to owners of cars you like at shows ask them who did the panel work etc. unless you have family in the trade or you do it yourself you will have to pay the $$$$$ for a good job

I was a contractor in the building trade and one thing that used to piss me off was people who after you give them a quote try to negotiate the price down    Thankfully those days are finished for me and I don't have to put up with that crap anymore, I've got a mate who panel beats so I'm lucky, he just says that job will cost that much and its a done deal.

I agree with bootlegger, I do a far bit of resto work from home and I quote the job according to the amount of work, the more work the higher the price. This like chroming where parts are done together usually get cheaper per part if you do a lot of parts, well that how my chromer works.
