Overheating issues.

Overheating issues.
I have a fully reconditioned 202 motor fitted in my Ek. That has a nice mild cam and a small amount of porting done. I am having a huge problem with it overheating at the moment and i'm after some idea's. Here's what i've done already.
A New Radiator. (Hr Holden)
Removed the centre ot the thermostat
Replaced the thermostat.160F
New radiator cap. 13pound
Has a new waterpump
All new hoses
Had the timimg reset
Had the carby adjusted
14 inch thermo running on a switch. Is at the front of the radiator and is pushing air the right way.
Also still has engine fan.
Running coolant.
After all this it is still running hot.
So if anyone has any ideas i'll be happy to here them, cause i'm nearly ready to give up.

Are you running a temp gage or just the idiot light?
Either way try another switch in the engine.
I once had the wrong switch in my engine, running with idiot light and had the gage switch in so the light came on not long after I started driving down the road

Ok. The car Runs at about 200 degrees F. but climbs higher when stationary (210-215). It makes no difference if your running on the highway.
The gauge is a brand new Autometre machanical gauge. And the idiot light is also coming on. Motor seams pretty bloody strong. The cooling system dumps water when it's hot now with the 13 pound radiator cap. i had a 15 pound cap on and it didn't. The block and the head were supposed to have been crack tested. I have tried the thermo fan every way and i'm pretty confident the are correct.

To check your thermo fan get a piece of paper and place it near the fan when it's on as that will show you whether it's sucking or blowing.
As for the overheating try a hotter thermostat say 180 or higher. I have seen cars where changing to a hotter thermostat solved the overheating issue. If that doesn't help another is to shroud the fan. I had a 308 powered torana that ran hot in traffic so I fitted a shroud and stopped it.

I've noted some thermo fans are designed to shift air in only one direction. (the ones with the curved blades). They do work both ways, but shift very little air in their opposite flow, but are brilliant in the intended direction.
What temperature is the thermo set to kick in?
Is the thermo fan mounted hard up against the radiator?

I've tried the paper trick already and just about shredded the paper. So i'm pretty confident the thermo fan is ok.
I also tried a larger thermostat no difference. i'll have to look into a shroud.

You could have a blockage. A &*#@ V8 i had reconditioned years back by a so called big name engine builder was savagely overheating when I got the car back.
I had the radiator and engine flushed, and there were enough filings and crap that came out that you needed two hands to hold the stuff. No overheating after that

the impelar on the water pump could be stuffed and not circulating the water

Triple check timing, block flush, then shroud (in order of increasing pain-in-the-bum to do) sounds about right.

it was so simple. I had the temp gauge sender mounted in the side of the head. Which was to close to an exhaust port in the blue motor head.
Moved the temp gauge sender into the top of the thermostat housing and sits on 180 all day. Apparently you can fit it into the side of the head on a red motor
because the exhaust ports are different. Which is what i did because my 186 red in th EH has it there.
All that trouble/$ for something so small. That's Cars i guess

Glad to learn that you've corrected your issue.....
Being a puor simple soul, I was under the impression the sender unit would register the highest reading when fitted in the thermostat body - immediately under the thermostat...... thanks for the enlightenment..... guess the coolant temp drops somewhat from the head port before reaching the thermostat housing......?
I further suggest this higher temp location to be a most suitable location for the outlet to the heater......?
And, for those new to over-heating issues....... don't ever resist turning your heater on if you get to dangerous temperatures and can't pull off the road....... it will drop coolant temperature by at least 5 deg C..... even on the hottest day..... guess y'all can put up with working on a steam loco for a few minutes.....

I remember doing that in my F0rd when it used to overheat, Rosco.
Turning on the heater would make the guage move towards the cooler section. Though I would almost melt in the process
