thanks all for your replies. The wagon is running well. THe ex owner confirmed that the motor has been out before so Im assuming the flywheel position has been moved and as such am satisfied with adjusting the timing by ear until such time as i pull the motor out.
thanks again,
Mat
Grey Motor Timing
Flywheel
I was in my garage today having a rumage,
found a grey motor flywheel it has 6 holes on it 4 for the attaching bolts and 2 for the dowel so you are probably correct as it would be possible to attach this flywheel 180degrees out.
the older I get and I am still learning

If I could think of something witty I would put it here
Cheers John,
Im replacing the cam timing gear as I stripped the old one last week, just waiting on an alloy one to come in. I didn't check the timing marks before taking the camshaft out but Im guessing your right and they were incorrect.
I'll see how it goes with the new gear,
Regards,
Mat
