It seems as soon as I deal with one slightly annoying problem, the old girl gives me another to keep me interested!
Just lately I noticed the front LH indicator is not flashing.
Rear LH is going OK
Dash LH is going OK
LH park is also OK
Swapped RH bulb and new bulb still no joy.
Both RH work fine and LH rear OK too.
Not too sure if it is an earth or contact problem but I suspect it may be situated somewhere in the column. I haven't had time to do a thorough investigation and rather than break something I am seeking some advice.
Any tips on where to start?
The horn is now working sporadically but it sounds like contacts????
It's part of the fun of owning an early Holden - like the guy on the Police Academy movies, they seem to make a new noise every day (can't remember which one of the forum guys I stole that quote off, but it's pretty true).
The indicators have a spring-loaded contact behind them that can get sticky. Some thoughts:
a) pull the indicator cover and gasket off, and push on the contact with your finger/screwdriver. It should move in and out quite a bit. If it doesn't (or if it's rusty looking in the bulb holder), give the bulb holder a clean with some sand paper (careful not to sand off the spring contacts), blow out the left over grit then give it a squirt with WD40. The contact should now push in/out freely - try your "good" bulb again.
b) if it still doesn't work, get a test light and check that the pins in the spring loaded contact are getting power (earth the test light, turn on the indicators then touch the contact - test light should flash on and off). If your not getting power, its probably a wire between the flasher can and the indicator (shouldn't be in the column).
c) If there is power, then either the bulb is crook or the earth is crook (it earths out through the bulb holder cylinder walls which you cleaned a little while ago). Test the bulb by trying it in a working light. Test the earth with your test light (connect light to battery and poke around on the bulb holder cylinder - light should come on).

Ha! Wouldn't you know it. The solution was really easy. Just above the battery is a plate securing the wires to the wall. Forward of that was a 'sleeve' with a connection in it and that is what was loose. All working now.....apologies to anyone I may have annoyed lately turning left with no front indicator.
