Looks can be deceiving.

Post by John »

"betsy" looked reasonably straight when I bought her. She had the usual rust, in went new floor pans, bottom of rear guards had new bits welded in e.t.c.
The body panels looked reasonable. (I'm a spray painter by trade so I've seen some dodgy stuff over the years) but after stripping back the shell I was reasonably pleased. Not too bad. Small amount of bog but all in all pretty good.

Now, I've started on stripping the doors. Can I just say whomever "repaired" Betsy in her previous life needs locking in a shed with Justin Beiber music playing continously.
What a mess. No dents knocked out what so ever. All bogged up and I'm talking 5cm deep in places. Seriously bad repair work
At least they were nearly completely rust free.
It's taken me 2 nights to knock the dents out of the right hand side doors.
But at least they will have a truck load less filler this time around.
Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer

yep after pulling as many apart as i have over the years i've seen plenty that i thought even had original paint, only to find they'de been painted numerous times, you never know what you've got till you pull them appart and start stripping paint that is unless you know the full family history personally
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

Yeah, often this quality work is done by apprentice panel beaters in a hurry to finish their project cars!
I had the same with an EK. Cracks in both front guards- turned out to be just fille coming away. The steel undernath was rust free

I've done some good work and I've done some real bad work over the years it all depended on the car and what had to be done to get it out the door.
recently I did my old mans 99 falcon panel van. It was a heap of shit. He hit a roo towing a dog trailer and went through a fence. The insurance company wrote it off and we kept the wreck. It still had 11 months rego. Under the new write off laws the insurance companies suspended the rego and give you one month to repair it or the rego gets suspended.
They gave us the car back two weeks later. All I could do was pull it out the best I could and bog it up to get it blue slipped.

Most of the time its actually quicker to repair the panel properly. Its more work to fill it with bog plus bog ain't cheap if you are putting cans of the stuff in.
