Hello,
I am about to try using an epoxy primer.
Normally I just use a single pack etch under any paint system (2K or acrylic) and it has never failed. This time I want to to try an “epoxy” over bare metal, fill then prime etc. the reason is I live near the water and things tend to rust if they are left uncovered.
My local paint shop stocks Protec and I have used their acrylic and 2K paint systems with success.
I rang the supplier and asked for epoxy but he seems shy of recommending this to me over 2K etch.
I was wondering if anybody is familiar with or used Protec Epoxy Primer (2K) 472 or 2k Paraphos Etch 429. Keep in mind I want to put filler over the top, which leads me to believe 472 is the correct primer to use.
The technical sheets seem to indicate either would be OK.
Any thoughts on this?
Cheers
Ed

Re: Epoxy Primer vs Etch?
Hi Ed,
I had my wagon painted in a PPG brand epoxy. Has held up very well in the garage over the past 3 years....
and am planning on having the top colour coat done in acrylic. EK283 (Greg) has used the same epoxy.
I think Leon also used epoxy?
Try searching for epoxy on the Forum as I asked a few questions about this too. heres one http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... ilit=epoxy
regards
Stewart

Re: Epoxy Primer vs Etch?
thanks for the help guys.
I have been using single pack etch under everything for years. Normally the septone stuff works just fine.
just wanting to move with the times and like the fact that according to the tech sheets I can lay filler over epoxy, then either seal it all up with another coat of epoxy then hi fill. Again, reading the tech sheets it says I cant polyester spray or fill over 2K etch.
rust prone areas within sills and doors I will POR15, all other areas i will try epoxy.
Cheers

Re: Epoxy Primer vs Etch?
im an ex spraypainter and i have used protec paint for over 20 years. ive found it to be a great product if used correctly.
i use the paraphos first then give that a quick dry rub with 180grit (IT MUST BE RUBBED BEFORE TOP COATING WITH ANY OTHER PRIMERS) then coat with parafill hi fill 2k primer. i have jobs that i have done that way over 15 years ago that still look great today.

Just to ask a question.. excuse me if it sound silly.
Can i put filler on the parafill? I've never been a fan of putting filler on bare metal despite being told I must absolutely do it.. I've also never had a prob.
I just started using Protec and I like it too.
Cheers

strange one RB.
Just got back from the paint shop and had all the tech sheets laid out and went thru all the different paints. Decided to go with Paraphos etch and use parathon or parafill primer. Wont break the budget either, he reckons I can lay filler on the primer as the primer will be well bonded to the metal using these products.. sounds good to me, and they can deliver to my place for free!
Cheers

Re: Epoxy Primer vs Etch?
Hi Ed,
We used the protec etch pro on all the hanging panels - will be interesting to see in say 20 years the difference if any between the paint on the body (epoxy prime) and the paint on the doors etc (etch prime)
