HR 3 speed

Post by ek amigo »

Can anybody tell me the tricks to fitting a HR 3 speed into an Ek manual sedan , is there changes to the tunnel , linkages , crossmember , mounts etc.
I have my eye on a nice reconditioned box but would like to know exactly what I am up against before I lay out the cash. oh the car will have 186 in front.
many thanks.

Yeah I would like to know whats involved in this swap over too.

Main reason for wanting to fit the EH to HR box is that you can leave the bellhousing on when removing the box and and or replacing the clutch. Those two bolts at the top /back of the motor are a pain in the arse to undo unless you pull the carpet out and remove the inspection plate on the floor.
The alloy bell housings also save you having to remove the starter motor with that bastard top bolt that sits in behind the extractors/ exhaust manifold.
Have often thought about fitting the later 3 speed box and wandered if you have to modify .. cut.. bash... the trans tunnel to fit it.?????.. anyone... anyone??
I was also wandering if a gearbox rear crossmember out of a EH or HR would bolt up to the EK /FB rails and line up with the EH to HR gearbox rear mount??

At the moment i am running a red motor with the old grey crash box and using the red motor mounts at the front and the 2 rear grey motor mounts...
This gives a solid 4 mount set up but as yet i havent found a header manufacturer that markets a set of headers to clear the rear mounts on the motor... which leads me back to the idea of running a EH to HR 3 piece crash box with rear gearbox mount under the output housing. It will do away with the old grey engine mounts at the rear of the red motor and open up the space to allow the headers to fit in. 8)

I had the red motor/ ek 3 speed box/..four engine mount set up in my green ek ute. Got an exhaust specialist to fabricate a pair of pipes that fitted up to 186 headers. Lot of stuffing about.

The HK onwards gearbox is a synchro 3 peed and is longer than the early holden crash box. also had a mechanical clutch mechanism which would be a pain in the bum to set up in an FB/EK

Yo..
Anyones thoughts / experience with this conversion would be much appreciated..
Surely there is a combo of 1960 to 1967 bits that bolt together and work for this conversion....
After all its all early Holden,,,,,

Looks similar to the box that was in my old ute. All that was done to clear was a bit of hammer work by the previous owners. I have no more info than that cars long gone and all I did was an engine swap.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.
