HQ question

Post by gareth »

i know its not a HQ forum but its an active forum, so i thought i would throw it out there... besides, the FB is on hold until i finish panelbeating my LH guard...

got a HQ, basically it handles like crap. going to do shocks, swaybars, bushes springs and whatnot... but whats bugging me is i keep reading im pushing poo uphill unless i swap to an RTS chassis for superior geometry. What im understanding there is then its not a hq anymore, its a h-whatever and probbaly needs polution gear and other junk. Besides, it seems a bit extreme...

anyone hear of anyone moving the upper control arm on the hq chassis? or is there some brilliant bolt on thing i have not seen that will fix the chassis deficiency?

i know a man who can set up a chassis, but what i hear is u need an impractical number of shims to make the hq right?

penny for your thoughts?

You can get a hQ to handle pretty well - you can modify the upper control arm mounting points but its not really necessary -
Redo the wear parts , get a decent set of springs and shocks and a good sway bar. Rear sway bar makes a difference as well.
Google the HQ racers website - there will be heaps of info on how to set them up.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

good to know! thanks Blacky.

If it did come to it, modifying the upper control arm couldn't be too hard in my mind. Certainly easier than swapping out an entire chassis. My understanding of RTS is its different wear parts, and the front upper control arm being further back on the chassis.

Is that correct? anyone else had experience?

On my HQ Monaro, I used Pedders heavy duty lowered springs 28mm front bar and 19mm rear and got some good quality shocks, fairly stiff but brilliant on smooth twisties :D

HZ chassis is fantastic, I have now fitted one to my coupe along with P/S after sampling the above mods in my old HZ Kinger.

I have the HZ factory wheel alignment settings here some where I'll have a look in the morning and see what I can find for you.

My scanner is kaput at the moment but here are the basic settings for an HZ
w/out P/S
Caster 1/2 to 1 & 1/2 deg Pos
Camber 1/2 to 1 & 1/2 Neg
Toe in .15 to .45 deg
Toe in 1/16 to 3/16"
Toe in 1.6 to 5mm

w/ P/S
Caster 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 deg Pos
Camber 0 to 1 deg
Toe in .15 to .45 deg
Toe in as non P/S
Toe in '' "

The basic RTS changes are top shock mount was moved rearward and the hole enlarged to fit larger diameter shocks and the upper control arm pivots were also moved rearward. If you can fit P/S at the same time as it has so much more feel than earlier models.
