Mini tub??

Post by Ed »

Hi guys,

Just a question.

As you all know, in the rear wheel tubs, the inner guard doesnt go up flush to the rail.

If I flush this up, do you think it necessary to split the wheel tub to widen or just pump it wider using jacks?

From my past experience I could get 225/14 under the std wheel arch on an FE, but it would scrub on the upper part of the tub at times.

My feeling is I can get away with just pumping the inners wider, but just want to check.

as usual, your advice is much appreciated.

Cheers

Depends on how low it's going to be, should just need pumping in my opinion :D .

sounds like we're on the same page Trev.

I dont think 5 - 10mm warrants any metal work.

reasonably low.. and lets say wearing 225 - 245/14's with a reasonably high profile inanticipation of 15's.

If you are pushing the metal out to the side ,up higher in the arch it is going to pull the top down , unless you are going to get up in there with a hammer and stretch the metal, not a lot of room up in there if you are going low as well , my 14 x 235 sat in there tight , touching both sides

I guess it's going to be a bit of trial and error, the extra room cant hurt.
any pics of yours Rusty?
nice wagon Trev and gee Joe has stuffed some decent rubber under there.

One thing I have noticed is sidewall shape differs with brand of tyre, with the wagon I went to the tyre shop and they tried various tyres and brands until we got the best fit.. we also played around with various profiles etc.

Ed , just in the process of making some mini tubs for mine ,because as well as mine not fitting ,I have to allow a bit of sideways movement as well because of the IRS Jag setup , but got plenty of room now , you might be on to something with the tyre sidewall , never considered that

wow jag set up.

did you need to narrow the drive shafts to make it fit?

i had contemplated this a while back, even pulled a jag rear end for it... but no go for me.. put it in the too hard basket.

Floor was totally rusted out , so was lucky ,sort of , had to make a total chassis ,so fitting it wasnt that bad .
Yes had to narrow the drive shafts 50mm either side , bit of mucking around , but not to bad, would be a pain in the arse to try and fit it to a good car .

The build photos are in My FB EK if you want to have a look , Rusty EK,s Ute.

Let us now how you go with pumping out your tubs :D

i just remembered I've read your thread.

nice work, very extensive!

sorry I've been reading so much I'm forgetting where I've seen it all.

I think pumping the tubs will be a very minor procedure compared to yours.

Ed.
I finally found the link to Gregs build up. He has done the rear inner guard mod to chassis rails weld.
