Ek Tow Car upgrades

Post by dmulally »

Hi All

just wondering if I can get some advice about making my ute into a decent reliable tow car.

After running out of steam up the blue mountains and needing a truck to pull me up (why does that crap always happen to me!!! :) ) I need to either sell the ute and get a modern tow car or sort the ute out.

Obviously a modern car is really not an option.

So here is what I am working with.

Stock engine which has varying compression over the cylinders but starts easy and has never missed a beat. I do have to change the plugs often though as they get oily.
Stock gearbox.
Stock exhaust.
2.78 diff...this will have to be the first thing that will have to change. I have old 3.90 floating around but I hated not being able to go over 55mph without making a fuss. Anyone recommend a happy medium as I tow long distances.

The ute weighs in at 1060 last time I was at the tip. :)

so any tips on what to do to the engine and anything else I may need will be great. My trailer has brakes so thats not the biggest problem. Oh, and I tow race cars. I dont really want to change to a red motor but suppose I would swap for one already done. I just dont want to lose the grey. It would be a shame.

Cheers and thanks in advance

Stock enginge but what, a grey? If so drop in a bigger red or pull down and freshen up the grey with a bit of a cam and some head work to improve torque. Diff gears around the 3:36 would be better suited for towing in my opinion.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

Hi and thanks.

It is a stock grey. Do you have a suggestion in regards to a cam profile for the grey?

Cheers

there's a pretty good description of what to do to yor grey in getting huge horsepower from yor grey and cause yor towing i'de prolly sujest a smaller cam than the one described, untill the engine's rebuilt if yor going to be towing i'de say first off go back to the 3.89 diff centre, towing + grey motor + 2.78 diff is definately not a good combo

I think you're right ratbox. I might try the 3.89 I have back in and do some test drives. Do you think its worth multi carbs and extractors or will that not have much effect on torque?

I could always ask the cam shop what they recommend. I anyone would know :)

Cheers for advice.

The only reason for time is so everything dosen't happen at once.
