Graeme Allbon's FB Cross Flow Ute

Post by parisian62 »

G'day everyone,

There's been a bit of talk about Repco cross flow recently see http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3207 so I thought I'd share some pics and info about Graeme Allbon's FB ute.

regards
Stewart

These pics were taken at the Nowra 2004 FB EK Nationals...

These two pics I think were taken by a member of the Victorian Club at Nowra Nationals...

As part of by Editor duties for the NSW Club I interviewed Graeme in 2004...this is an excerpt of what he had to say...

Tell me how you ended up with your ute and do you know anything of its history?
I purchased the ute from the original owners son and daughter-in-law. I had seen the ute around Goulburn and thought it looked pretty sound. Raelene spotted it parked outside a house and we had a talk to Phyllis Costello and she said that she was thinking about selling as it needed a lot of work. On the 31st August 1997 we went out to the Costello’s Farm and was told that Princess Di had just died. The day was a very emotional one for the Costello’s as the ute was Harold’s Fathers and they had both purchased new FB’s from Turners Garage in Goulburn in 1961. When I first got it I just put in a fresh grey and gearbox and tried to get some originality back into it. There was minimal rust but the turret had been beaten out as it had been rolled at some stage. From there it was used as a daily driver for the next few years with any failing parts replaced.

What have you done to the FB ute so far?
At the end of 2001 I decided it was time to tidy up the body so I did a quick panel and paint job at home in my carport. One of my neighbours wasn’t too pleased and called the EPA on me. I had the flash kit (Autolux – Flashline) restored over the years by Val Neil in Brisbane so after drilling 140 odd holes and 3 toning the paint it was time to fit it! The engine runs a Repco Highpower – crossflow head – stage 3A with twin Webbers, extractors, lightened flywheel, angle cut dissy and some other high performance grey motor parts. 120bhp! This runs through a heavy duty clutch to a standard box. The wheels have had widened rims fitted and the body sits 1” lower on sedan rear springs with a Selby swaybar and heavy duty lowered front coils. A PBR VH-44 booster applies the race compound shoes to the finned drums. These are some of the 60’s Hot Rod modifications that make this FB the Sportiest and one of the fastest around!

Does it have any accessories?
Well it doesn’t have seatbelts! But lots of performance and sporty accessories like – Smiths Tacho, Chrome side pipe, mesh visor, Autolux flash kit, fox tail and noddy dog. NASCO items such as Anti-sun tinted windscreen, Airchief radio, Warmaride heater, Radiator protector, parcelshelf, door paint protection plates (inside & outside), locking petrol cap, venetian, and number plate frames around its original plates.

Postscript
Graeme sent me me this pic of a race car with cross flow...

Hi Mick,

I swapped emails with Graeme this morning to get his OK to post up the pics. He still has it...I don't think he would let it go too easily...

repco high power crossflow head = cool as 8)

when i rebuilt my grey, the pistons had std on the top, bought std rings but they were way too small!! took the piston into the shop and it turned out to be a red motor piston in the grey

years later talking to my mate at Terrys auto parts (free pulg  ) he tells me it is a repco engine, the engine was painted blue when i got it, dont know if that had something to do with it being repco.

has anyone else heard of these??

ps no it didnt come with the cross flow head, it had no head.....well that makes sense

8) You will find that motors of that vintage that were painted blue wer reconditioned by a company called GEM, these are similar to repco.

i got a hotty grey once that had a split bore when i picked up another and was swaping the hotty stuff to the stock motor (what a waste of time should have just put a red straight in) noticed a BIG difference in pistons turned out the hotty motor had 161 red motor pistons in it
i knew a guy that had a few of these heads some of you may have known him (ray bailey) he passed away a while back don't know what happened to all his stuff

ratbox that ray bailey your talking about was a close friend of my dads (fx and fj car club), yes very upsetting that a man of his knowledge and collection of such equipment has now left us.

All his stuff was passed over to someone else in the club, the good bits sorted, then the rest left to be onsold to other members, nothing of that good stuff so to speak really showed up once it was all sorted. Although i have also heard that a bulk lot was sold prior to his death.

I know a few months prior to his departure, dad was offered a repco head, but dad being dad, said no, its gotta be stock.

Last i heard his name was when i went to see marks wagon (prior to purchase), the owner was also a friend of rays.

..ya gotta admit, THAT X-FLO HEAD IS ONE HECK OF A PRETTY PIECE OF ENGINEERING!!
Make the ol' Grey look rather modern....plus I love the ute with a flash kit and Red rims with spinner hud caps!

A few years ago I was talking to a bloke on the phone in Victoria that had one of these Repco heads and had a mate that had one as well.Didn't keep his phone details after I bought some parts from him but he said he was trying to organise the remanufacture of these Repco heads.

He had a foundry/engineering firm lined up but the setup investment cost for the pattern and associated engineering works was around $20 000 to $30 000 range back then ( about 5 years ago ) and he was trying to organise some committed buyers to get the project going. He needed to produce a minimum number of heads ( I think from memory 25 ) and if the manufacture of the heads got to the sale stage they would most likely end up around the $4 000 to $5 000 price mark each.

Haven't heard anything about remanufactured Repco heads on the market so I'd guess the project never got underway.

Terry.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.
