STUPID PEOPLE

Post by J »

Forked out a lot of money to get an HR Front end into the EK.
Why?
*When braking the torana disks that had been adapted to fit the standard kingpin front end, would pull the car to the left.
*I wanted better steering
*I wanted the ability to lower my car, a lot!
*Wanted all that balljoint stuff all you fancy people talk about.

Now....
*Steering at full lock hits the sump
*Steering is just as heavy as before
*Brakes still pull to the left when braking
*Car is not too much lower (can be fixed with guard pumping)

I also have drop stubs for the torry brakes which I spent a good wad of cash on...
Now... should I just $*#@ off the torry brakes and put some HR ones on, I cant use the drop stubs on HR ones can I? Apparently hubs are almost impossible to find these days.
What else can I do?

Never going to a big company again...

If your brakes pulled to one side before, the front end won't fix that!
Why did you think it would fix your steering? Have you got a HR drag link? If so the original EK on shouldn't hit because it's straight, the HR one is bent towards the sump.
Wheels will govern how low you can go.
HR brakes should go on HR drop stubs.

Sounds like you need to learn how to do these things yourself so you only have yourself to blame, sounds like they only did what you asked for  , Trev 8) .

I would take it back there and at least get them to fix the steering hitting the sump and the brakes - a HR front will lower a standard EK but fitting a HR front to an EK that has already been lowered will not make it lower ........... fitting HR front wont make the steering any lighter, what exactly did these people say they were going to do for you ?
Did you get anything in writing ?

What's that meant to mean?

J, if you get really stuck, I have the disc front in my HR wagon which I would be happy to exchange for your drum stuff if it makes life easier.

Thanks for clearing a few things up guys, unfortunately I now have even bigger problems
They purchased the steering second hand and put it on.

It was to do with clearance issues with the torry discs on the kingpin front which I figured would be rectified when adapting them to HR.

Unfortunately I got nothing in writing, and wasn't given any pictures of how the car would still pull to the left and how the steering would hit the sump before I paid them. If I did have pictures however it would be my own fault.

All easy enough to fix.

Sounds like they have used the same discs/calipers and not reco-ed them. Which would exlplain the pulling to the left.

Have you still got the bits they pulled off. If so refit the EK idler arm and that fixes the sump issue.

Guard clearance is an offset issue, either look into machining the back of the centre of your mags if there's enough meat in them or flare the gaurds (uuurggghhh no!)....

Chuck it all out and put the original stock steering and brakes back in - you know it fits and no more troubles... :P

Wait... put the original one back on would be considered restoring!
The day I go down that route will be a dark day for all

Pretty sure they chucked all the stuff, didnt even get a chance to say I wanted it.
But I'll source an arm and hopefully no more sump smashing happens.

Might be putting stockies on but if I chose to keep the hustlers then machining them back sounds like a good idea.
Cheers

Your car's definately earned the right to be named Christine.

Idler arms are all the same from FX through HR, it's just the adjustment thats different but i dont know the exact settings, i'll have a look tomorrow if you want. I cant remember where i got my idler from, might of been Wilkinsons i think for around 30 bucks. I definately got my draglink done by them though, exchanged it cost me 140.

If your idler's knackered i got a spare here that i just pulled off mine if you need it to keep you on the road?

Give me a call if you need a hand with anything man, i know Andy's too busy chasing Japanese school girls...

Put a grey motor back in!
I just got my hr disk frontend sorted recently and I feel your pain. As Trev said - changing the front end over wont fix any steering faults- thats another job.
I could be wrong J, but I think you need a 149/179 sump & pickup on your red when you put it in an EK on the HR front- because your engine mounts should have been shifted backwards. That should give you the clearance for the HR drag link.
Definately go for the drop spindles- I got the shortest set of uncut springs I could stuff in and now I got about 1.5 inch of travel-

Any lower and I wouldnt be able to steer- but if you really want to go that low springs alone wont get you there.
