replacing glass in 1/4 vent

hi guys

how hard is it to replace the glass in a quarter vent window, I was driving along in full air con mode, both at maximum wind flow when a rock off a passing truck smashed the drivers side.

i just read through replacing the whole vent window....im hoping its easier to pry the broken shards out and slide another in.

ps

anyone got a reasonable glass. this is an unrestored daily driver, so a replacement that looks its age would be required

The good thing is that the quarter window glass is flat. Any auto glazier should be able to cut a new one to the right size, and probably fit it too.

Hi mate,
Considering the glass is broken, I’d say it’s feasible, but in the long run it’s probably better to remove the frame. In which case you’d be better off Just sourcing the complete assembly. I do have a spare glass if you’re dead seat on the idea.

im not dead set on any particular way, but the easiest would be preferable.

whats the complete unit worth and why would that be better to replace than the glass ? whats just the glass worth ?

It is easier assuming you remove the frame to insert the replacement glass as I suggest. Remove broken assembly and replace with servicable assembly, eliminating the step of replacing the glass.

It’s not common for the glass to break so failure of the assembly is usually by the lock pivot shearing or the bottom swivel axis pin also shearing in my experience. This is why I have a spare glass. Happy to send it to you for the cost of postage.

Having said that, if I were in your position I would simply remove and replace the whole assembly. Easier and more likely to be successful.

I would just replace the glass and leave your quarter vent assembly in the door - you need to replace the glass anyway , you just need the replacement glass , a strip of setting rubber, some white spirits and a couple of clamps and the job would be done in an hour

Thanks Clay,

Very much appreciated in keeping my old gal on the road, id never park it anywhere if it doesn't lock.
it just spent a few months locked away because one door didn't lock - after i fixed it, the window broke
