Picked up a Speco finned alloy cover last week, at some time in it's life someone had it chromed. The chrome is bubbly and peeling in a few areas and really makes the cover look terrible, I want to polish the alloy to restore it but what do I do to get rid of the chrome plating without damaging the alloy??

Hey Newman,
The easiest way is Alkaline Electro stripping but finding someone to do it will be a problem.

The way I have done it is buy a small bag of Soda Ash, mix with water at a 30% solution then leave your peice submerged for about 3 hours.
The mixture will be of high pH (Alkaline) if the chrome is starting to peel off it shouldn't take too much to lift the rest.
If the 30% solution is doing nothing after 3 hours add more soda ash to 50% and leave over night it will not pit the alloy but wash well with fresh water after finish.

find a plater that does alloy, if they can chrome it, they generally can remove it.
