G'day all, I bought this Ek about a month ago- i wish I could claim it was an impulsive buy but I actually gave it some thought before i parted with my bucks. While I can't say I regret my decision it needs a lot more work then i had planned initially.








I am currently selling my house so tasks requiring major stripping will have to wait until I relocate or until the bloody sunday home opens are finished.
In the meantime I have to satisfy myself with smaller jobs. so far i have made some half assed attempts at slowing the smaller rust sections, changed the uni joints, changed the clutch cylinders, replaced a few wheel studs and repaired the glove box. (so it stays shut- there's a kill switch under the dash and whenever I take off the door swings down and shuts her down. )



I spent the other weekend eating my way through a hr and now have a diff, disk front end and 186, but I am planning on keeping the grey motor in the short term so I am going to have the front end ready for either motor untill I decide to do something with the 186.

To stop this whole thing snowballing as they tend to do I am putting blinkers on and focusing on getting the sills repaired and the hr front sorted by christmas and that is it!

Great to see you giving this car some love, I like your short term plan (fix sills and get HR front sorted before Xmas) nothing worse than thinking you can get more done than what is reality.
Now that we all know were your kill switch is, are you going to move it? , Trev .

Yes Cal, I did. The last car was in excellent nick, which I appreciated but not as much as I do now! I had actually decided after the next viewer left I would keep it, but he had the cash as well as a possible FB project he was looking to offload so it went. I spoke to him a couple of days later and he said it had spat heaps of oil out on the freeway and wasn't running the best.
I offered him his money back but he said he was putting a chev in it and was still happy with the car overall.
I now understand your frustration searching for the right car as I came full circle within five months. Hats off to your patience-
I paid a grand less for this one than the I did the pink one, in my desperation- knowing full well what i was in for.
At least I can't afford to sell this one now so it must be fixed up

Bit of an update- Had sills repaired (replaced) last year and gave them a quick flick of paint for the moment- floors weren't too bad and the repairer just continued on past the sills and repaired the small rusted out areas New carpet and underlay and mexican blankets went in shortly after and the dash got a freshen up too. With the interior more livable I have just been driving it as is when I get the chance.




Now I'm sick of the shoddy steering and brakes (leaks and wanders like a b@#$%!) so the Hr front is ready to go in. I am interested to see what the subfame is like- I know the front box section needs redoing so I might as well give the whole lot a good clean up as well as tiding the firewall while Im at it. My intention is to remove the front end and sub frame but leave the motor in place. Can anyone see any issues I may run into with this?

If you are going to pull the subframe off I reckon it would actually be quicker and easier to remove the motor and box than to frig about working around it.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing this morning Blacky- the reason I wanted to leave it in is I am currently playing garage tetris trying to keep the whole thing in one car space . It just occured to me that once the sub frame and frontend are off I will have the room I need.

subframe was rooted.


Got it repaired and blasted but made the mistake of thinning chassis black- I didn't have a big enough nozzle so thought I might get away with just a little thinners. Result looks good but is quite prone to scratches etc. So will be redone at a later date.



Front end in and booster in.
Hr rear went in yesterday.

Any body want anything off these? ( I might keep the diff centre til I try out the other one.)

I think one of the front wheel cylinders as well as a king pin are no good.

how much for the brick paving

you gotta pay more for the stained ones- water proof you know.
But otherwise that stuff goes to the tip.

At least save the outrigger!

Just spent the last couple of weeks putting some new paint on the ek- had hoped to get the lot done while I had time off but then easter and anzac day- you know how that goes any way all back together now. My first go at painting a vehicle unassisted not perfect but I have learned heaps- in the past I have handed the gun to someone more qualified when things started going bad -wish I had the time and space to strip her properly but she's now water proof for winter (mostly) and rust free ( mostly). I am happy with her for driving now.

Still need a new driver's door, passenger guard and bonnet letters. next up is fitting 'stractors and exhaust and some twin strommies- anyone have any idea how to clean up the carb bodies?- the zinc is looking pretty crappy on one and the other has a kind of brick-like finish. Will probably try soaking them in coke or clr clear over night and see what's left.
