Manifold Gasket Leak

Post by Cal »

I gave the EK it's first caning last week on the M5 freeway to see what speed I could get it up to

Anyway, the end result is I think I've sprung an exhaust leak at the mainfild gasket. Its not too loud from outside the car, but a bit annoying inside.

The question I want to ask is, if I leave it will it get worse??

I've changed a few some 20 years back in my red motors when I had to change starter motors every so often, but I think it may be beyond me now.

I don't mind getting it fixed if I have to, but if it's not going to get any worse I may leave it for a while. I might try tightening the bolts, though I don't think that will do anything.

Think I may have found where the leak is. :?

It seems like it's where the exhaust pipe joins the flange that bolst onto the exhaust manifold. I can move the pipe around, but the flange itself doesn't budge.

Pardon the stupid question, but this obviously isnt normal, as I presume the pipe is welded to the flange?

I'll try some muffler putty and see if it helps. If not I'll take the flange and pipe off and have them welded up

Thanks ekdave.

Gasket seems to be OK. i put a towel around where the pipe meets the flange, and the noise almost went away.

Instead of fart arsing around with exhaust bandage, I'll just take it off and have it welded up
