Fitting baby capsules to an FB/EK (in Melbourne if possible)

Hey there everyone -

Just wondering if anyone could recommend somewhere in Melbourne where I could take my EK (and my wife's car) to get the bolt/seatbelt setup in the back for the baby capsule that my wife and I are going to be needing in the imminent future (February)

We wife took her R Series Valiant to an RACV-accredited installation place today and copped nothing but attitude from the guy there about how unsafe her car was going to be for our baby, and that's not something you want to do to a lass who's 29-weeks pregnant, and especially not my wife.

Surely someone on this forum has had to do this sometime in the recent past, and found an installation place that's more sympathetic to classic cars?

Have you got rear belts Adam? If so go to your nearest Autobarn/Supercheap/repco etc... and buy a couple of baby bolt kits. They come with everything needed to fit them all you have to do is drill a hole or two. Then get someone to help you do up the bolt. I did mine up with no glass or speakers in as it was easier. But my old fairlane I fitted them with everything in place inckuding a gas tank.

You can just see them in the pic, had to fit two for the EK.

As for the moron at RACV accredited installation place, I 'd give him a call and kindly point out the kids will be safer in a car someone actually cares about. Rather than the mindless f@#kwits who don't give a rats about the tin can they drive around in. In all seriousness how often are classics in major accidents? I wouldn't do anything to harm my girls and I've made sure they are as safe as they can be when in my EK. Not too mention I don't plan on crashing it!!!

Thommo - my wife did indeed say "Hey - how about asking Trev when you get a minute?"

Devilrod - I don't have any seatbelts in the rear of my EK, but my wife does in the rear of her RV1.

Are the fasteners on the rear parcel shelf absolutely necessary? My wife is LOATH to cut into hers, and we were under the (perhaps misguided) notion that you put the bolt almost under where your arse goes in the rear seats, and ran a belt up between the top and bottom of them?

And I agree with you completely about older cars rarely being involved in serious accidents - we simply don't have the speed or power of a P-Plater in a Commonwhore!

I would do whatever it takes to make the car safe for the kids, whats a couple of holes in a parcel shelf? I do think it is the safest spot for them aswell, if you fit them lower it gives the seat room to move forward (not good), Trev

I drilled both of mine through the parcel shelf 75 X 75 4mm reinforcing plate high & tensile bolts with nyloc nuts the pissy anchor will fail before the fixings or mounts if you dont want to damage original trim put it in the shed for a few years or sit the anchors under it and you can always weld bolt holes up down the track

When I did the belts and anchors in my FB a guy I worked with tried to talk me out of it because they hadnt been fitted before but seatbelts are cheaper than windscreens (I've only got one spare windscreen but 3 spare kids)

i'm expecting my second kid in april and would like to do this too. i don't have seatbelts in the back. (already have front seatbelts installed) can you guys that have done this pls post pics of where/how to fix the seatbelts and baby seat restraint bolts.

im with craig ,,,,,,actually i can supply any one a 13 year old crash test dummy ,,, dont worry if you break him you can just keep him ,, or ebay his serviceble parts after

seat belts at repco lap sash 60 odd bucks and 13 for the top anchor ,,,, i would recomend to make fish plates for the belts like trev said 75 x 75 x 3 or 4 mm

The more expensive way i must add, but does give retractable belts.... Other way with non retractables would be simply welding a plate/nut under the shelf with meets the safety requirements and one in the wheel arch and bolt it all up...

I will add you arent allowed to use a single plate/nut as a multiple anchor point without having them sheer tested....so we just put in seperate ones...and we were too lazy to make the plates when they cost $4 bucks or something like that and there coated!

If you don't want to drill into the shelf you can mount it in the boot and get an extender strap to poke out between the seat and shelf. Not ideal, but my mate did that in his car.
