Warmaride heater

Just wondering if anyone can answer a few questions Ive got about the heater ,I got one cheap on ebay couple of weeks ago complete with vents :D and the seller assures me that it works well or did at the time of removal anyway but when i plugged it in nothing ,Does it need to be earthed or just plug and go .Also do you take out the old poverty pack heater core when installing them ? And finally can you modify/add to the heat/air control on the dash as mine only has a slide control for air ...cheers Deryck.

I think it may have to be earthed - it's been a few years since I installed a warmaride to the wagon, so i'll have to remind myself and get back to you...

There is another control lever which needs to be installed alonside the plenum vent control - you just need to get another one and install it to the empty slot. This then has a connecting rod to a plunger valve to control the amount of hot water flowing through the heater.

My heater valve proved to be leaky and so I installed a tee valve at the firewall in its place.

Yes, you will need to remove the 'poverty pack' heater core...

thanks for the replies B/Bear i"ll have another look at it today isuppose youve just got to find a good earth point to connect to anyway time will tell. Then i need to track down the 2nd control lever and see if it will be easily attached in the empty spot ,Dave I wonder what will be harder finding one or connecting it up :? thanks again Deryck

I was lucky as I stumbled accross one reciently. Take out your glove box ( a couple of screws) and have a look. From what I have seen it looks like 2 screws and a clip to change it over. But I am yet to do mine as i have other more important thing to do first.
If you don't find one message me and I will speak with the guy i got mine from, he has a whole container of bit and pieces so he might have a spare one......

So dave it turned out to be easier than i thought i searched thru some boxes in the shed and to my suprise found another control lever with both arms on it :D , took out the glove box bit of stuffing around and job done all i need now is the little chrome knob for the end but no hurry.B/bear can you elaborate on the leaky valve issue you dealt with ,after installation of the heater i too have a bit of a leak from the plunger valve :evil: Iwas thinking about pulling it apart and see if it can be fixed any ideas ? thanks Deryck

The original plunger valve was leaking out the shaft seal - I have heard that there is an overhaul kit available for these through Rare's maybe?

I just went for a look at the local hardware shop and found a tee valve to take its place. It means you (or your passenger) have to reach under the dash to turn the heater on rather than using the original slider lever on the dash. Will post a pic once the digital comes out of hiding...

Found the camera, and here's the tee valve installation as promised

The original valve leaked all over the place, and so a visit to the local plumbing warehouse for a tee valve, then to Pirtek for some 5/8" barbed fittings and an elbow fitting to make it all work.

Sits in there tightly with no brackets required (for this setup anyway).

Easier than pulling over to lift the bonnet to open / close a valve mounted at the back of the cylinder head.

The other method is to fit a generic aftermarket heater tap. Mine cost around $25 from Supercheap, just can't quite remember if its a &*#@ or holden one. Hooked it all up to the standard lever. Allows some control over the temp too! Just need to make sure the one you buy works the right way for hot and cold (slide the lever up and down to see which way you need it to open). I'll try to remeber to get a pick tonight.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I too have one of these to fit, have just the bare unit and the vents, no hoses or anything else.

Can someone post pics of where on the engine I plumb into - I assume by the water pump and the bung on top of the head??

Please confirm before I get it wrong! :roll:

Thanks B/bear for the piccies i'm gonna try and fit a new tap that way i can utilize the 2nd control lever ,Im not sure about an overhaul kit it looks like a sealed unit but I'll look into it though. Brett any details on your heater tap mod would always be appreciated :) thanks Deryck

Ok, couple of pics. In the pic you can see the plate that holds the factory heater temperature control cable has been mounted 180° from how it should be, also I can't remember if I put the loop in the cable or not :? . I should really make a braket to hold it in place :oops: Just one of the many things I haven't done yet. Too much fun driving!
