Fatboy,

I've retyped this from a plating book I have...I've never tried it...

Equipment needed 12V battery, plastic bucket, jumper leads and a piece of lead or steel. Make a mix of 20% sulphuric acid and 80% water. You can use half and half battery acid and water. ut the acid mix into the container. Take a piece of steel or a large bolt and hang it in the bath using heavy gauge wire. A strip of flashing lead is best, bend it over the top of the bath and leave it so you can clip on to it with jumper leads, it must hang down into the bath. Clip the NEGATIVE jumper lead to the lead or steel and connect to the NEGATIVE side of the battery. Connect the other jumper lead to the POSITIVE side of the battery and clip the POSITIVE lead to the part you wish to de plate. Holding the jumper lead dip the part in the bath or hang it over thise in the acid mix. The job will fizz, lift it out and inspect every few minutes, leave it too long and it will bite into your parent metal. Rinse well.

regards,
Stewart

sanding bumpers

Post by ek wazza »

i have sanded and painted bumpers when i did up my first torana as an apprentice panelbeater. i used a 36 grit disc sander and then 80 grit on a dual action sander. i then hifilled the bars and they turned out fine in body colour. if i did it again, i would use a 36 grit disc and then an 80 or 100 grit disc on the sander before using the dual action sander. it just depends on how long you want to spend preparing the bars before priming or hifilling. in my experience you should not have a problem by sanding them yourself then etchpriming or hifilling and painting them.
