steve, i talked to my engineer the other day to find out legalities and a disk front isn't required, only a hr front (disk or drum). just thought i'd let everyone know. L&K

CRS are now making disc conversions for original front ends which are legal in Vic but unsure of other states but would think they would check out ok

he would just about be the only engineer to do it every engineer i've spoken to or dealt with wants discs, but there are always exceptions to the rule

yeah? okay cool. my engineer is pretty cool. he's a german guy who is very straight to the point. he doesn't mind cars actually having power either (he has a 1976 corrola with a 350 chev for his daily work car, total sleeper though 8) .

It's always been my belief that the braking system should only be required to be upgraded to the factory minimum specifications for a particular model and engine combination.

For example:-

HR Holden 186 had unboosted drum brakes as the minimum standard for both 161 and 186 engines as fitted at factory so HR Unboosted Drum brakes should be acceptable for any engine up to 186 in any model Holden prior to HR as long as the vehicle weight is not above that of a HR.

Disc brakes and/or booster were an option not a requirement for 161 and 186 in HR.

Of course HR disc is a better braking system than HR drum but I can't see why the engineers think disc should be mandatory when the Holden engineers at the time didn't see it the same way :?

And before I get shot down in flames  , yes I know drum brakes aren't an ideal braking system and yes, I can understand that better brakes mean a potentially safer car and yes I would personally prefer disc brakes over drum brakes and yes, the engineer can play god with that bit of paper that he has unsigned and you want signed and yes, at the end of the day he has the final say so what he wants he gets.

I've spoken to a few engineers ( NSW ) just recently whilst engineer shopping for V8 FB/EK project of mine and they have all said the same as Rat said above  .

They would only accept a drum brake front for 149 into FB/EK.Any capacity higher than that must have a disc brake setup ( In NSW ) and dual circuit brakes for 202 and above.

Yep, gotta agree Rat  .

Drums are OK whether it's with a 138 or 186 I reckon. You learn how to drive a drum braked car and respect the limitations that drum brakes have accordingly.

AND I'D KEEP IT QUIET ABOUT THE EXTERNAL DESTROKE IF I WERE YOU

Fun Police could be lurking

Do you grind off the "202" or "3.3" on the side of the engine aswell?
