commodore diff into fb wagon
commodore diff into fb wagon
hi guys ive been offered a low ks diff 4 speed and engine from a early model commodore. has anyone ever done a diff conversion was there much involved or should i stick with using a hr diff. are there any other diff types that people have used other than 9 inch that are the right length from the start instead of having them shortend. ie centura diff maybe. i dont really want to have to modify the floor to put a bigger diff in if i can help it. thanks wayne

Wayne, the best diffs widthwise are either torana or Volvo - do a search on the site for info on Volvo diffs for the best models to pinch them from etc, the LJ type torrys are a common swap as well as they are a bit narrower .
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

ok thanks guys. i will check into that. it was just that ive been offered a complete running gear from a vc commodore wagon with very low ks on the clock.was trying to keep it all the same as im probly getting the diff anyway. but the volvo option sounds good.that way i get disc brake aswell. ive heard that the centres out of these are interchangeable with the holden item . maybe a different spline .not sure if its true but would be nice if it deos . thanks again wayne

for my money i'd avoid the VC commodore diff, they really arn't alot stronger than the banjo .... having said that, if you wanted to do it, get a UC torana diff, its the same centre as the VC but its the same length as the HR diff ... i did one of these conversions in my EK Wagon a while back ....
the easiest way to get strength without going for a 9 inch is to get a VN commodore diff kit down ... which will then allow you to use 2 short vn axles (normally they have a long and a short axle) and just have the diff centre offset a bit.
this is what i have in my FB Ute, only cost me $300 that was supplying them a diff, and getting it shortened and also HR mounts welded to it etc...

if your serious about it let me know and i can point you in the right direction.
only thing with doing it this way is you go to commodore stud pattern ... i guess thats up to you if you want to or not. i believe a certain model volvo has the same stud pattern as old holdens, but i don't know much about them other than that
