Fuel Pump issues

Hi all,
While continueing the never ending road of trying to get the ute going I thought I'd check the fuel pump out. The reason being was when i had the fuel line disconnected from the carby i was rotating the motor by hand to check the valves but no fuel was coming out of the end of the line. There appeared to be fuel in the filter (situated on tank side of pump) and there seemed to be fuel in the carby fuel bowl (fuel was pumping from in from plunger when depressing pedal).

Anyway, I took the fuel pump off and hand depressed the little lever and fuel came squirting out. I pulled it all apart and it seemed to be working fine albeit the lever was vey stiff to depress.

The filters inside looked to be in good nick, and the rubber pump thing wasn't torn or damaged, so I put it all back together.

I emptied the filter and blew it out to make sure it wasn' blocked. The problem is I put it all back on the car and now no fuel is no longer even coming into the filter???

Any ideas.

By the way, this pump is diffferent to the one on the wagon, it has no glass bowl for some reason, piccy below.

Sigs try and completely put your hand over the carby, and seal it off. Get someone to crank the motor over for you. The pump maybe a bit lazy in the valve department, and needs a helping hand by the way of some engine suction. If there is no air leaks, induced from where you pulled things apart, it should suck fuel straight up after about 30 seconds of cranking. Let us know what happens.

Thats a late model red motor fuel pump that came out sometime around HZ Holden?? or early Commondoor?? that you have there.Should still work on the grey as far as I know.

I'd be replacing the fuel hose from the end of tank steel line to the fuel filter and from fuel filter to fuel pump just in case it has a miniscule pinhole or crack in it that is allowing it to suck air in instead of petrol.Check also to see that the fuel hose clamps are tight as well.

Had similar problem with a glass bowl fuel pump years ago.

Was working fine until I replaced the fuel filter between tank line and pump.After replacing filter, no fuel to pump.

Checked rubber fuel line,had a poofteenth of an inch crack in the hose allowing it to suck air.Must have happened when I was twisting the rubber hose to get it off the connection when I replaced the filter.New hose, problem solved.

Not saying this is the cure to your woes, but is a possibility and an easy and cheap fix if so.

One more thing, have you noticed the engine oil getting thin and kind of petrolly smelling and the oil level actually increasing??

If so this would indicate a perforated diafragm ( or however "diafragm" is spelt :? :? :? ) which in bad cases will pump fuel into your sump instead of the fuel line to the carby.

Another area to check.

thanks for that, will try all. The clamps on the filter hose ends are the simple open and close ones, will replace those with proper ones and see how I go.
John, will also try sealing the line on carby side to incerase vacuum. Will let you know how i go.

ok, i'm pretty sure its in correctly. I had to tighten up the nuts to take up the gap due to pressure from the arm inside when i reinstalled it.
