I have these 'scuff plates' :? . Is this what they are called?

Is there a way to make these look presentable?
Pretty sure they have a skim of bog over some parts,
they have been poorly painted with silver.

The thin dress strips on top. Can these be reconditioned?
I have 2 sets of these, one better than the other.

EKSPCL - you seem to be "following" my recent projects - in October last year I decided to fit stainless scuff plates which I had purchased some two years earlier.
These were fabricated and supplied by one of our Victorian country members.

Stainless ones will never rust and I believe when you scroll down to the pic, may "steer" you in the direction I took.

Some years ago, I had a play with stripping, filling and spraying my f l/hs scuff plate - I sprayed it with Alkoid wheel silver - it sort of has an epoxy build but will not harden to that of ceramic - the result (and my wife is exceptionally carefull not to "damage" any of my work) is that it marked in places and I felt was only a stop gap until something else presented itself.
It did and has further since............ read on...

The stainless plates come in a satin finish - I'm afraid I'm a bit of a "shine addict" and decided to subject themt o the buff - with very satisfying results - be warned - there are many pitfalls here..............
I also "worked" up the inserts and very carefully and painstakingly got them up to a very satisfactory finish......... obviously any deep marks will always be resident, but for minor abrasion, there is sufficient "meat" to remove most.

I adhered the inserts to the buffed plates and fitted them .......... no matter how many pix you take of stainless - you can't get a pic to do it justice..............see below.......

Now - alternative - using your existing plates - and I must state that I have not done this - yet.....

I don't know if you are following my POR system posts - I have stumbled across this sytsem and feel it may very well lend itself as the most suitable cheap option here - next to purchasing replacement steel ones from Rare's.

This system will completely seal any rust yet provide a rock hard (have done this) paint finish which will outlast almost anything you can dish it up.
As for the inserts, I would point you towards a POR product called Artisan metal polish - 120g tub will set you back $26 - I find it incredible for aluminium trim - I have coated my front l/hs (so far) with POR Glisten PC - another rock hard clear coating for alloys (copper, brass, aluminium etc) It is not recommended for steel (but absolutely fine for stainless) - see my post in this section - POR system - just jump over the stuff I have thrown up not pertaining to Glisten PC.............

Hope some of this helps.....

frats,
Rosco

Thanks John,
yes, mine were from Sam - he took a peek at what I had done with them at our Treasurer's wedding - hadn't seen them brought up with the buff........ maybe his will be done for Yamba - they do come up a treat.

Please people, contact me BEFORE you try to buff these - I may save you an arm, eye, or another set of plates..................

Rosco

The stainless looks great. I think that's something on the cards for me as well.

FYI rosco, you have some kind of hairy animal loose in your car.

My scuff plates I had H.P.C ceramic coated. They look like polished alloy and with this coating they won't rust anymore. They look really nice :)
