timing gear question

is it ok to bash the timing gear on with a hammer (in the centre)? I'm worried about damaging the camshaft bearings etc.
same question for harmonic balancer too???

hey greg ive done it before you have to remove the fuel pump/dizzy
to hold the cam from going backwards and popin out the rear cam plug
as for the balancer just wack it in the centre section checking keyway
alignment and alittle lube helps

Hi,
I had my timing gear and crankshaft timing gear pressed on by the blocke who re-profiled the cam.
I can't remember fitting the fibre gear back in 1977 - but can tell you I have had to hammer on the harmonic balancer - make sure you use a socket and bar just big enough to cover the hole.
I was a bit concerned about the crank bearings - but realise there is a great bloody flywheel to counter any blows. If you run an auto, the torque converter has a much lighter weight.............

do you mean put something in against the fuel pump lobe to stop it going backwards? like a socket bar or something?

Yep, A good solid pry bar,screwdriver or something against the fuel pump cam lobe to help stop the cam from being knocked back too hard against the rear cam bearing plug,otherwise like mez said, you run the risk of knocking out the rear cam plug.
