damn dash... please help

Post by mattymartin »

hey guys

does any one know the secret to getting the light & ignition switches out of the dash...
Image

we were having trouble getting the light switch out as there is a big lug of wires attached behind the switch...

and the ignition switch is a F@#K'N puzzle, thanks to stewart parisian 62 & paul (smooth customs) they informed me that there is a hole that you need to push a pin in to release the ignition barell...

but still no luck... please let me know ASAP, as joe is getting frustrated as he wants to start to paint the inside...

thanks

Matty, From memory, The light switch has a button on the coloumn side half way back, That needs to be depressed and then the knob will pull straight out, As if you are turning the lights on. The ignition barrel, you need either the special tool to undo the ring thread or use a screwdriver and hammer and tap the thread around to undo it. When I did mine, The bloke across the road had the tool and when we couldn't get it out, we put a large flat screwdriver in the key hole and gave it a tap. Check your service manual!! This is a heads up to all!! Original Service Manual is a must!!!! Gets you out of all these little annoying things! It explains how to and where to find the button on the light switch and tells you how to remove the ignition switch. Matty, if you need the special tool send me a PM with your address and I'll send you my boomerang.

Gday Matty

From memory the ignition has to be in the lock position,
full anticlockwise, with the key in, before you insert the pin
into the small hole to remove the barrel.
Then undo the retaining ring.

Light switch removal has been covered above, a couple of other tips with the ignition - turn the key as far as it will go anticlockwise , then insert pin - I normally use oxy tip cleaners. Once you feel the tip cleaner push the retainer in and it may not have moved since 1961 so be prepared to play around for a while, turn the guts anticlockwise and then pull out of the housing. A squirt of graphite before starting wont hurt.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

The only reason for time is so everything dosen't happen at once.
If Macca's home delivered there'd be one less drunk on the road.
