Anyone know where, or if, I can buy a spray can of Grey Motor Engine paint in the original colour and does any company still do it Yes/No ??
Local Auto Stores say no-one does it in a spray can anymore.
Closest colour I can get to locally in what appears to be similar colour is a VHT colour called " Cast Iron ".
The kids have used my spray gun to defeat Darth Vader in "Star Wars At Home" Episode 1 and the spray gun isn't usable

.
Yeah, go on 'ave a laugh!!
I don't want to stuff around buying another spray gun, getting correct paint codes etc.
Any constructive help appreciated,
Terry.

Hi Terry,
as to the correct colour of Holden grey engine enamel - I think it is quite varied - from Massey Ferguson to Castrol green....................
Depends what they had on for the day -
You will see many varied "greys" - no one, I believe, can say any grey is wrong.
I found a supplier here in Melbourne who prolifically states they have the original code................
The supplier I got mine from is Eastern Auto Paints p/l
2/20 London Drive - Bayswater, Vic - 3153
ph (03) 9761 2155
Fax (03) 9761 2144
their product code is 363-G2X1 - don't know if there is relevance with that code to another firm - I believe the prefix of 363 relates to auto enamel
I asked as to whether it was heat tolerant for engines - I was told it is just normal auto enamel - mine has not suffered in any way from heat or chemicals (oils, fuels etc)
The colour is a greenish grey - if you have a peek at the sump in this pic - will give you an idea by what I mean "green" grey - it is sort of a Castrol oil green (some would say that GMH used it to camouflage any leaking oil)
We have a few in our club who have chosen this as their "grey"
I think it is probably worthy to state that if you do get some mixed up - keep the code so that you may match it for future use.
I used a 1k etch then acrylic primer prior to laying two coats of this on my engine components..............
hope some of this helps, Terry....?
frats,
Rosco
ps - if you can't get it mixed in an aerosol - try Bunnings - they have the "Preval" system - cheap little set up that permits "aerosol" application of any type/colour of paint.........

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies fellas.
Couldn't really get anything local at the auto shops so went to local hardware shop. They had a can of normal spray paint for $7 which appeared to be around the right colour going by the colour chip but when I sprayed a test section on an old sideplate lying around it came up a sort of Massey Ferguson tractor grey.Too light that colour.
Even though it would only be going on an old running 149 I was a bit worried that ordinary paint may not take the heat and oil that would eventuate so...................,
Might try Tony's Homebush Rare Spares suggestion and keep the other suggestions as a back up.
Thanks for the help everyone,
Terry.

Engine enamel Dulux pre 73 formula 393-10367 should be able to to mixed by any good paint supplier.
Officially Dulux is the colour but in reallity there were many shades of engine grey depending what colours they had left over at the end of the day to mix up an engine 'grey'.
Power Plus PP427 engine enamel is the one, other grey rattle can colours don't seem to be that close.
