just in conjunction with my previous post on motor swap, can anyone here tell me if this LJ Torana sump would be a suitable swap to put on my 186 red motor and would it avoid hitting the draglink as the present one does. thanks all.

I'll do some sump measurements tomorrow.I've got an LJ sump on a motor and an EH sump so will see what I come up with and let you know.

From memory, because the LC/LJ sump bowl is right at the back I think it will clear the drag link. The other red motor sump bowls ( except EH ) sit about 2 inch or so further forward and that is probably why your existing one hits the drag link.

G'day Farkem and Trev,

I've just been called in to work so didn't get time to do exact measurements but will do so tonight after I get home.

Had a brief look at both LC/LJ and EH sumps and from what I can see there would be no reason that the LC/LJ sump wouldn't be able to clear the drag link.In fact it would appear that there would be more clearance with the LC/LJ sump than the EH sump would provide by looking at it.

I fitted a 161 in an FC years ago with a kingpin front end and I'm near 99 % percent sure I used an LC/LJ sump as the HK sump wouldn't clear properly.

I'll do more precise measurements tonight.

Hi Dave,
been watching this with interest......... it is getting pretty hard to find a good EH sump - if an LC/LJ will do the job - I'll probably pick one or two up for myself - plus oil pickups.............
You may still find the occasional LC/J at wreckers - let us know, please.

In regard to the baffle - it can't be fixed - the principle is to allow oil to quickly fill the bowl, but to restrict movement forward so as to keep a supply over the screen/pickup at all times................
I am trying to remember how the hinge was fitted - sorry, can't - if it is a pin arrangement, you may be able to carefully punch it out..............
Flap, as I remember it was only approx. 1.5 mm steel.......... just wondering how one of these "rusts" - they should be coated in oil most of their lives....

frats,
Rosco

hi rosco. i will certainly be keeping my eyes out for a decent one and will let you know as soon as i can find a couple, if i can pick them up reasonable price i will get a few and you can have for the price i pay for them. as far as the baffle goes, the one in this sump has no hinged part, it is just a solid barrier in the bowl, with no movement.dave

Hmmmmm......... don't like to be the bearer of bad news but from the measurements I've done with the 138 red motor from an LJ Torana versus EH Holden sump it would appear that the EH sump wins... just!!

It's hard for me to do exact measurements as the LJ motor is way up in the back of my shed with lots of Sh#t around it making it difficult.

FB Holden Grey motor sump as fitted to the car with original kingpin front has approx 1 1/2 inch clearance between sump and original drag link in straight ahead position.

Didn't do lock to lock measurements.

EH sump is damn near identical in shape to grey motor sump but the grey motor sump is 3 inch shorter at the front of motor so that explains why EH sumps fit red motor conversions but we already know that

I reckon the LJ sump would still touch the drag link ( perhaps only just)even though it has the sump bowl at the rear.If I was out in the bush on the side of the road with a badly leaking sump with no replacement sump available other than an LJ one I think I'd get it to fit.... with the help from a hammer    .

That said, the pic of your sump, Farkam, seems to be a little different to the sump on my LJ motor, yours seems deeper in the bowl and the curve from the bottom of sump to the start of the bowl in yours seems more sharper than mine.Perhaps yours may fit OK but then you haven't got an oil pickup either.
I'm not into Toranas so don't know whether they also had different sumps??

I'd like to be able to give you a definate Yes/No answer as to fitment but can't add any more than what I've written.

I know it's a pain in the arse but if you had an old red motor ( just a block would do) and could quickly whack the Torana sump on ( couple of sump bolts would do ) and engine mounts and do a "dummy fit" into the engine bay then you would know for sure whether it would fit or not.

On the other hand.........

EH sumps and pickups can be found, you just have to look for them. They sometimes appear on Evilbay and go from approx $60 to about $120 but I've heard of blokes paying bigger money for them.
I've bought complete EH motors just for the sump when I've found them within a reasonable travelling distance from home.Sorry, but I haven't got any spare EH sumps.Last motor I bought for $50,.. 149 red motor from a HD and fitted with an EH sump.Motor runs fine and EH sump was a bonus.

many thanks teryy, does not sound promising does it? we are going to do another trial fit once the front end has been de-rusted and put back together again so will try this sump to see what happens.

i will let you know the outcome but it may be a couple of weeks as we have heaps of work on the front end.

thanks very much for all your effort in this, it is very much appreciated.

sorry trev, looks like we might both be out of luck.
