gday all

finally got my sender back from rares recoed and just in time for a 450k round trip to the s.a. riverland
it took about 6 weeks, and cost $89.65 inc gst
after bodging it up a few times in a couple of years - with metal putty etc
its good to have one now that doesnt leak etc

came in handy as rares knocked mine back as it was just too rusty - but worked fine :?

as you can see mine was pretty shot :shock:
but because mines out of a wagon, they are a lot harder to come by hence the saga :roll:
rares normally have them in stock for changeover, but didnt have any wagon ones

cracked my old one open for a look sees, looked pretty rusty from the inside too :shock:
also thanks for the lead from igor, for around $700 you can buy a repo tank with sender - but their senders dont suit standard tanks :(

Hi Ray,

Thanks for that update. What would the difference be between a sedan and wagon sender?

I have a sedan sender in my FC wagon and when the fuel gauge shows 1/2 tank it's actually empty (as I discovered 20kms out of Keith :oops: ).
I guess the FB/EK senders are the same.

Heres something you blokes might be interested in.
Good for testing sender and gauge.

Image

To test your sender.
Connect the leads of your multimeter (set to OHMS) to the sender body and the terminal. Move the float up and down to read the resistance.

To test your gauge.
Connect a 30 Ohm resistor between the sender wire and earth. Gauge should read FULL. 15 Ohm and the gauge should read 1/2.

If both are good, make sure you have a good earth contact for the sender.

Hi stewart

have never seen a sedan s/unit :?
......if anyone can provide a pic of a sedan sender unit, it would be much appreciated :wink:
but wagon, ute, p/van are the same
same tanks but wagon fillernecks are on the opposite side to ute & van

would also like to add the repo senders from rares are outsourced anyway, so you could get it done cheaper - direct/elsewhere :wink:

and also the repo senders are not as accurate as the originals - as with most repo stuff

Hi Ray,
Thanks for the post and pix.

I had mine done a few years back and wasn’t happy with the look of the changeover replacement from Rare’s – I handed in a near new looking unit and got back what was probably fair wear and tear.
It took some considerable effort and patience but I managed to reclaim and have my unit reconditioned - thanks to the staff at Rare's - Bayswater for that.

Over here, Rare’s don’t actually do the work – it its outsourced and for the 90 odd dollars I believe they are well rewarded for their handling – from what I can see, it is basically just a clean-up and replacement of the rheostat and gasket – probably cost wise of less than a tenth of the coupons we are asked to part with.

I wasn’t game to do the refurb myself, but I can assure you I will should it happen again. I now have two and will keep the other as spare. It is also relevant to state that the replacement rheostat does not give identical readings to that of my original.

It is a daunting thought to understand that electricity is active within the confines of our fuel storage.................... still, haven’t heard of too many over the almost 50 years coming to finality.

Seems we sometimes can’t get the purpose designed sparking plugs to do their stuff with the benefit of compression, why the heck are we worried about the fuel sender unit...................?
