Hi everyone,
Does anyone have alarm systems and immobilisers in their FB/EK's?
The reason i ask is i want to try and add abit of protection for my new stereo to my car.

Hide as much of the stereo as you can and either get a good alarm fitted or at least a kill switch.

Also if you can find one an old style steering lock.

The head unit will be in the glove compartment following a similar design to yours, although i might just put it in with some double-sided sticky tape like my current sony unit is Its the speakers that iam worried about being spotted.... they are currently pioneer's top of the line units and there is just no way that they can be hidden.... Iam hoping that because they are yellow they will be camouflaged

Can anyone shed any light on how i can create a kill switch?
As for a steering lock i got a standard steering wheel lock on special from super cheap, best of all its yellow

When I said old style I mean the nasco type. They slide over the gearstick and steering wheel and you get a BFO size padlock to lock it to the steering wheel. As for a kill switch never had to wire up one, but I'm sure someone here has.

To hide your rear speakers there is a couple of ways to do it. One way is called a stealth shelf (or something along those lines) where the spekers are placed under a false parcel shelf covered in speaker cloth.

Or buy some cheap no name speaker grilles that fit your good speakers to hide them under.

Maybe have a look at some car audio mags for more ideas..

People steal only what can see is the first point and this happens when exposed (or you show people) most theft is done by somebody you know or have met.

As for the kill switch there are many ways, but here are two simple methods.

1) Find the (-) Negative side of your ignition coil and run a wire from it (make it un obvious) to a toggle switch and hide the toggle where ever you like inside your cars interior/engine bay/boot etc. Then on the other side of the toggle switch run a wire to earth/ground = bare metal. What you are doing is creating a dead short. When you hit the switch NO SPARK. Cost would be around $5 to $15 and around 30 minutes to one hour worth of your time.

2) Similar deal here but split the starter motor solenoid wire and place a toggle switch between the two. Which is the solenoid wire? It's the thin wire to your starter motor (purple? colour that goes to the solenoid and is held on by either a screw terminal or spade terminal. It is NOT the red wire that is nutted on with the battery cable! You will find the solenoid wire beneath that cable) Simply find the solenoid wire, cut it, extend it and run the cut wires to either side of the toggle switch which you have hidden somewhere. When you interrupt the power supply NO STARTER.
Cost = $5 to $15 and 30 minutes to one hour.

In doing either of these two mods be sure to disconnect the battery first.

Do both, can't hurt! Just remember to use them. (Oh, and keep them a secret)

thanks smooth is there any way i could "lock" my speakers in position? iam thinking of maybe trying to get some kind of security fastening device like on security screen doors, or otherwise riveting them in that should make it alot harder to just waltz in and waltz out with them

Hey Mod, Why are you so concerned about your speakers? I know they can be a large investment but I'm sure I saw that you have lock-up car accomodation. The installation of the said STEALTH Shelf should be the deterant, without harming sound quality. The fact your more concerned for your speakers and not the CAR is scaring me. Does Perth have a large speaker stealing ring or is the local aged care facility need them to hail their patients on when its bath time! Sorry for my rant, I have installed in my sedan an eight speaker system that if you looked into the car, all you would see are two crappy looking mid range speakers in the kick panels, With tweeters up under the dash, Mids down under the rear bolt position of the front seat and two 8" kickers installed behind the back seat(Doubles as a massage unit after a long cruise) The two speakers that are visible are 120 watt duels that have a nostaligic cover over them so no one would want them by the way they look. Definately put in a kill switch or hidden starter.

I am worried about the speakers because they will be what will tip off potential thieves of a nice system lurking in the car. I will be installing pioneer splits in the front doors down low, resulting in these being visible no matter what i do, and i couldn't justify covering them up because the look so damn good I think iam just going to have to take my chances. Iam not worried about the car getting stolen at home, rather when I take it out for a night cruise then go and grab a movie or something, a time when many cars go missing, especially in freo and the likes. I think i will install the speakers with hex head bolts, put in a kill switch and hope for the best.

ps, the car is only insured for $3500, the purchase price, and my mother, the one in charge of the car's rego/ insurance etc doesnt think its worth more

Put a rear louver in it, that will make them hard to spot.

Andie you can get security sets with odd shaped attachments - star, 2-prong, 3-prong, square etc. Pretty sure the last attachment set I got was from Dicksmith or Jaycar. We use them alot for surveillance cameras and such. They are just simply bolts with rounded or flush head and require a certain attachment to remove them.

Problem with that is so can anyone else...... and if its not the first time it will be the second. Realistically if they want it that bad nothing will stop them.

Do some research on Stealth installs it will be your safest bet. Then once installed you will still give it away if you cruise around with it cranked up..

Try bolting your speakers thru parcel shelf (with speakers fitted from underneath) using small rounded off bolts then cover whole parcel shelf with speaker cloth-no more speakers in view! Use cloth on covers for the splits also then you have no names showing.
