Welcome Russ, I supose it depends on what your doing to the car (more info please), I for example run a red 6 on SR plates with a standard column, Trev 8) .

Don't know Vicroads rules but here in N.S.W you need a collapsible column for anything above ( and including ) a 202 ( thats what the rules say but real life may be different depending on whether your engineer is having a good day or not!! )

You'd probably also have to go to a dual circuit brake system ( such as in HQ's ) and fit HQ or better brakes on the wheels.

There would be other requirements no doubt.

Best to call Vicroads and talk to one of thier recognized engineers about what you'd like to do as opposed to what he'll let you do.Would be the starting point and could save you some time and dollars down the track.

Cheers,

Terry.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

I used a VL colum in mine, cut the ignition barrel out and covered it in vinyl.

To save yourself some grief ask the engineer you'll be using. It will save you having to re do things later and cash too....

steering colum

Post by FB Cruiser »

G'day Russ, the colum I was using in my fb was a LJ torrie one but Iater found that the LC colum dosnt have the ignition barrel in the colum, that would make a neater finish, Just my thoughts PAT :)

I used an LH/LX column in my ek Sedan.

Was perfect length and fit the dash pretty well. Was able to use the existing firewall hole. Didnt have issues using the torri knuckles to hit the rack also.

I had to blank the ignition lock and was also able to pick up a grant steering wheel adapter from rare spares for a flashy steering wheel. Rares only has adapaters to fit LH shape torri / HJ+ shape Kinga according to the guy down there that they got made up in the US.

Still need to change the adapater, change wheel and fit the blinker arm. Also looking for a better spot for the tacho where it aint so visible !!! somehow .

i'm only guessing here but i'de say that colum has been modified mephious cause LH/LX colums usually look longer than that from the dash

Hahahah Trev , yeah mate its bloody huge and an eye sore. Might relocate it to the gearbox hump and put some sort of cover over it, then whip it out when required.

Mick , its stock mate. I purchased it N.OS with the plastic retainer still attached to the end of the column. I ground off alot of the factory clips/blocks so it was just the collapsable column. Length remained as original, then i had a guy make up a sleeve for the top to hide the ignition which I ground down and filed off. Shroud sits over the original shape of the column so could be throwing out ratio.

Worked pretty well.

i've done that before capt bill but that's not colapsable unless you made it colapseable
supose it depends on a combination of engineer (if he checks :D )rego authorities in yor state
mephious does the colum go out through the firewall far? that is the best LH/LX colum i've ever seen in an early holden :) wasn't doubting you it's just that it looked so good

No probs at all mate, it does sit a little bit further out then the original but it aint much difference. I think the shroud just hides alot.

From memory it could be 4 inches, Ill get a shot once its back from the auto elecs. Will explain it better then my typing hahahaha.
