Hey Guy's, I know this has been covered before but I can't find a thread. Whats involved in putting an auto behind a red 186. I've heard that turbo 700 is the way to go? Is this a major conversion or just the same as a tri-matic. Whats the advantage of turbo 700 over tri-matic. I'm running a 5 speed celica box at the moment but my knee has packed it in, So am looking for the alternative.
Cheers Theo Z..........

Harko has done the conversion to t700 and Lynchpin has the car now. I plan on checking it out once its back on the road as I too intend to fit one behind a 186. Currently running a 161 and trimatic.
PM Harko or wait for him to reply...

well i can't comment on them into an fb/ek other than i reckon a castlemaine rodshop tunnel would be a must.
i am putting one into my LH Torana behind a 202, and this is what i have been up against so far..
* adaptor plate kit from CRS
* custom gearbox crossmember
* custom length tailshaft
* custom gear shifter install (i used b&m megashifter for t700)
* custom bracket on carby/efi for gearbox kickdown cable
* its looking like i will need to hammer a few areas in the tunnel to get some more clearance around the box (not major)
* bending of the oil dipstick tube to fit in the engine bay
optional extras..
* some sort of mechanism to lockup the torque converter (vaccum switch etc) when the car is cruising to get better fuel economy
* tranny oil cooler ... not mandatory but highly recommended
* shift kit (why not i reckon

)
im sure theres more little things but these are the main ones i have come up against. the box is in getting recoed so once i get it back and fit it up i will be able to tell you if theres anything else thats major etc.
personally i think its going to be a good combo however it is a very heavy box compared to the trimatic and celica 5 speed ... so this may have a negative effect if your engine is a stocker .... on the up side, it should put my cruising RPM slightly lower than the celica 5 speed i replaced.

Hey Sammy, Sounds like a lot of work and dollars, Would the tri-matic be an easier solution. The Van is my daily work truck so I need to be able to install in a weekend and I haven't done a conversion like this before. Any thoughts?

well yeah the cost of the box plus the parts to install it are more than a trimatic, but i've had a celica 5 speed before, and honestly i can't go back to a 3 speed auto
if you got your shit together and made sure you had all the parts you could easily complete it in a weekend ... but im making my own crossmember so its going to take a bit longer than a CRS made one ...
as for the rain ... yeah its been great since everything got drained, the reason im doing this to the torana is that my VR commodore got written off and i got $4700 from it so im using that to get the torana back on the road ... it was full of water too, but everything in it still works after drying it out
im keen to finish the torry so i can then start playing with the FB Ute again!
