Ek Subframe

Hi gents

I’m it the process of chassis ing an EK sedan. I seen a post on here where one of the guys did away with the bolt on part of the subframe and welded his chassis rails straight to the subframe. I like this idea but just wondering if anyone knows of any down sides to this method, besides the obvious never removing it again.

Thanks Trevor

Hi Trevor,
Apart from involving time, effort and money and certification by a road traffic engineer, if you need the strength it’s probably a good way to go. I think the car you are talking about used the chassis components from a 1970s valiant as well as the engine and braking, probably an advantage in terms of compliance. Then again you could just do up a 1970s valiant. Tell us more mate.
Cheers
Clay

It’s just the usual build. LS1 and 6 speed ( or may go Trimatic). Custom front end from some one like Rod Tech. 4 link rear with coil overs, full floating rear axles as I have that stuff left over from a race car. Have a 9 inch housing but thinking I might go with a lighter weight rear end as it ain’t gonna be a drag car..

I’m just finishing off the floor and sill panels and about to start on the chassis rails, and just like the idea of the subframe welded in completely tied into the chassis rails and rear end.

you will need a chassis torsion test anyways in vic so just go for it

Sounds like you're up for some work, and engineering. A custom chassis could be nice and tidy, and help get clearance for exhausts, which can be tricky on these cars. If it's designed to pick up mount points for suspension z nd hanging panels engineer will probably just want to demonstrate torsional rigidity. Opens up the possibility to do a tilt front too I suppose.

GPI, so do you know when that stupid torsion test kicks in, is it only if you modify the rear or is it as soon as you fit the V8

just add 1800 bucks to your build costs projection and forget it :wink34:

My mate had to do it when he turboed a 186 in LJ Torana.

Engineers view in NSW was that no torsional test was required provided the engine met the capacity guidance in NCOP (348ci for an EK). Any bigger (eg 350ci) and torsional test required. Opinion will vary by engineer I guess.

Should stick in the banjo diff on leaf springs and a 149 red motor lol

All things with wheels will cost you money !!!!

I have seen an EK with a commodore strut front welded in, actually looked a good fit. Many hours with the tape grinder and level.

Even a 149 upgrade will require engineering in most cases. You can get away with 138 red usually.
