Outer sill removal from B pillar

Hi All, I'm stuck removing what remains of my left hand outer sill from the bottom of the B pillar. I've drilled out spot welds I can find as per picture and one each on the top of each side. Are there others hiding somewhere or some other trick?

Dave,
Cut as much of the sill away from the area then use vice grips chisel etc to remove the last bits.
You may have to drill in other areas as sometimes the spot welds can be invisible.
There is also another brace inside between the inner sill and outer sill in this area.

Its a fiddly area - if the sill is good around here you can leave the original section in situ and trim the new one to fit around the bottom of the B pillar - more often than not the rust is at the lower part of the sill not the top ?

Hi Dave I did exactly what Blacky mentioned when I replaced the outer sills on my ute Frankenstein it does make it a lot easier.

Thanks Blacky / Neil, that sounds like a sensible option. Will let you know how I go.

So I managed to remove the bit of the outer sill from the B pillar. There were a number of spotwelds from the inside that I should have looked harder for.

And I had to sacrifice the brace bit to do it.

Hope its not important...

You can always fabricate a new one before you put the new outer sill on Dave. They tend to be rusted through at the bottom anyway. Have you got the pillar braced up? It’s a good idea to hang the doors and get them lined up with the new sill when you refit the b pillar.

Perfect timing. Great photos Dave. I have just fitted inner and outer sills and had no b pillar to speak of at the sill joins. The brace was also not evident in the remnants. For those using a rare spares outer sill ( I think it's a great panel) there is a dilemma with this brace because the sill comes complete with the b pillar hump already stamped in, so that when you install the new outer sill with the inner, unles you cut it open you cant fit the sill with the brace in place. I see some, such as the Old Timer restoration, used the existing b pillar bottom and cut that piece out of the new sill and then butted it to the new outer sill. In my case, there was no remnant to use. So, the dilemma becomes, cut up the hump and install the brace before fitting the outer sill, or cut open the sill and install the brace after the pillar is welded to the hump (risking the look of the outer sill).
I'm hoping there is a third possibility ......

I reckon as long as you have something in there you will be sweet - even a piece of 30 x 30 box cut down and stitched onto the bottom of the pillar and down onto the inner sill or something along those lines, I can picture it but cant really explain it ....

It’s not going to be the end of the world if you leave it out. Plenty of cars getting around for years with rusted out braces. I wouldn’t go cutting freshly installed panels is what I mean.

Thanks mate. I've worked a get around. Made a brace and fed it up between the inner and outer sill and then welded top to pillar base and bottom to inner sill lip. So same angles but slightly different mounting points.
I'll have a bit more of a think when I do drivers side sills as it was a major fiddle.
