Pulled the tail pipe of my old FB just now and it appears to be brass from the muffler back.
It's not that obvious from the photos but I'm pretty sure of it.
Not sure you could squash a steel one like this without creasing it. Would have had a lot of back pressure. There is not a speck of corrosion where as the rear body has a bit.

I'm wondering if anyone has heard of this.

See if a magnet sticks to it and give it a tap with a grinder and see what colour it is .

It's brass. No rust.

brass or copper ??? I seem to recall copper tailpipes were sorta popular back in the day .....

Probably is copper then thanks Blacky. Never heard of this before.

I had an uncle-in-law who ran copper tailpipes on a number of cars, no muffler. It was a little antisocial around town (near Newcastle), and not too popular with the local police. When needed, the exhaust would be packed with steel wool to quieten things down when putting around. Get back out of town, plant the throttle wide and the steel wool gets ejected pretty quick. I dread to think what smouldering steel wool would do in roadside grass

I'm guessing relatively cheap and easy to get hold of (plumbing fittings), big bore, and able to be bent and soldered/brazed easily in a back yard.

Make sense. Seems to be 1.5" inside diameter. Certainly outlasted the rest of the exhaust which is just rust. Just goes to show there's always some thing to learn about these old jiggers. Thanks for your input fellas.
